Geography is the science of the Earth that is concerned with land formations, terrain, inhabitants and phenomena. There are four traditional directions of research in this field: the spatial analysis of natural and human phenomena, physical study, the study of relations between man and land and Earth science. Geography aims at understanding the Earth with all its natural and artificial complexities.
As discipline, Geography can be divided into two areas of study: human and physical geography. Human Geography is focused on the human influence on the environment and the space it inhabits. Physical Geography studies the natural environment, the weather, vegetation, soil, water and land formations.
Geography is a base science that is necessary also in solving matters such as climate change, energy dependence, conflicts and war, globalization and even terrorism. Geography has also different applications like urban planning, community development, cartography, climatology, geoscience, transportation management, environmental management and many others in which potential students can specialize.
A research degree offers you the opportunity to develop your research skills and prove yourself as a researcher. Queen's is committed to the enhancement of research training and teaching and offers postgraduate research opportunities across all fields of study.
Research at Portsmouth is clustered around four main areas of interest: * Geography of Health and Well-being * Historical Geography and Spatial Analysis * Environmental Processes and Change * Geographies of Labour, Cultures of Work and Economic Development
We offer MA, MPhil and PhD research degrees on a full- and part-time basis. You may enter the PhD programme either directly, or as a continuation of an ESRC ‘1+3’ research training programme (CREES is an ESRC-recognised research training site and has also gained funding for researchers in History from the AHRC).
The applicant will be based in the Department of Spatial Analysis and Decision Support. The department investigates the role of spatial variation in environmental systems with a focus on Land use change and Adaptation to climate change risk. Methods include monitoring environmental change and multi-scale analysis and modelling of spatial processes and patterns

The PhD course in Geography (3rd cycle from Bologna) allows a scientific education and the obtention of a PhD degree in Human Geography and Physical Geography. The course is built so as to respond to the depth or reinforcement of knowledge complementarity, as well as to the acquisition of new competences, by holders of a Masters degree or graduate degree in the several areas of Economic and Social Sciences or Earth Sciences.
Our PhD and MPhil programmes provide the chance to work with an expert in your subject area in order to develop a substantial research project that results in a significant dissertation. These degrees have no taught components, but relevant taught modules may be attended by arrangement to develop appropriate research skills (including the study of ancient languages or technical/professional skills).

The program aims at studying transnational entanglements in a historical perspective and asks for causes, forms and consequences of the emergent transnationalism in fields like economy and commodity chains, political movements and ideologies, cultural institutions, international organisations, consumer culture, and the educational systems.
With the supervision of a director, the doctoral candidate carries out a personal research, which requires several years of continuous intellectual effort. Apart from a basis of solid knowledge, the doctoral thesis demands the candidate's skill to lead a long-term project, a sound interest in the chosen field of research and a certain originality of thought. In general, the doctoral thesis gives way to publications of several articles in specialized reviews, or even of a book.
The Geography subject area of the School of Environment and Development (SED) is highly research focused. Our full time staff are all research active and have published almost 300 articles, papers, book chapters and books since 1999. We currently supervise almost 40 research students, who are funded by the EPSRC and ESRC, among others.
