    The Dental School is pursuing research in a variety of fields, ranging from the fundamental sciences to epidemiology. This diversity reflects today's requirements to understand dental conditions, the incidence of oral diseases and the provision of effective treatments. Four Research Teams and one Dental Research Unit exist to support research in areas of strength. Research projects leading to higher degrees are available across a broad range of dental disciplines. Candidates register initially for a higher degree and dependent upon progress after one year it will be confirmed as either PhD or MDSc. Dundee Dental School was given a Grade 5 rating (on a scale of 1 to 5) for its research in the 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercise, the highest grade in Scotland.
