More information about the Environmental Chemistry & Toxicology Discipline

Environmental Chemistry is the science of processes that influence the composition and chemical properties of the environment, proper for habitation. It is concerned with the background, behaviour, movement and impact of chemical compounds in all layers of the environment. It researches the means through which the human factor affects these layers. Environmental Chemistry utilizes knowledge and tools from other sciences in the study of air, water and soil. It addresses issue of contamination and degradation and it aims to exploit theoretical knowledge for creating solutions to the aforementioned problems.

Environmental Toxicology is more focused on the destructive effects of chemical agents on the living organisms of all ecosystems. Empowering the knowledge provided by biology, computer science, math and chemistry, it sets out to understand and prevent harmful impact caused by toxic agents.

  • PhD in Chemical Sciences

The main objective of this Doctoral Programme is to equip doctoral students with any necessary ability for carrying out highly qualified research activities at universities, public bodies or private organizations. For this purpose, the doctoral students’ education is based on a regular experimental research activity and a proper specialist learning pathway within the various curricula, so as to develop any necessary expertise and skills to independently manage the research activity in an international exchange framework.

  • PhD in Environmental Studies (multidisciplinary)

IVM’s mission is to contribute to sustainable development and care for the environment through scientific research and teaching. A unique feature of the institute is the capacity to conduct environmental studies in their societal and economic context by integrating natural and social science perspectives. IVM research is organised within four departments: Chemistry and Biology, Environmental Economics, Environmental Policy Analysis, and Spatial Analysis and Decision Support.

  • PhD in Hydrological, Hydrochemical and Fluvial Processes Research Group

    Queen Mary, University of London

The breadth of the School’s research expertise offers a wide range of opportunities for those wishing to embark on a programme of doctoral research in human or physical geography. Research students are registered for University of London degrees MPhil/PhD) and work under the close supervision of members of academic staff. We welcome applications from those wishing to study full or part- time. The School regularly holds NERC Algorithm Studentships and is part of Queen Mary’s Block Grant from the AHRC. At the time of going to press, the school is recognised by the ESRC for +3 and 1+3 Studentships and CASE Studentships, and is part of the College’s bid (jointly with Goldsmiths College) to host an ESRC Doctoral Training Centre.
