More information about the Electrical Engineering Discipline

Electrical engineering is a professional engineering field which deals with various electric-related issues like electric power engineering, electronics, power electronics. It has many sub-disciplines that are microelectronics, telecommunication engineering, signal processing, control engineering, computer engineering, integrated circuits, digital electronics, power engineering, optoelectronics. The field aims to look into the problems of electronic systems which can be large scale (electric-power engineering) or small scale (nanoelectronics). The discipline aims to provide knowledge about generation, distribution, transmission and application of electrical energy. Graduates can work as engineers in very broad job occupations, starting from manufacturing of electronic components to electrical power systems and telecommunication engineers.

  • PhD in Doctoral Programme in Telecommunications

    The MAP-tele Doctoral Programme in Telecommunications is a joint venture of Universidade do Minho, Universidade de Aveiro and Universidade do Porto (MAP), three Portuguese Universities with a strong tradition in the area of Telecommunications Engineering. The programme represents a fusion of the doctoral offers in Telecommunications in the three institutions and constitutes a unified effort to prepare highly qualified human resources in Telecommunications.

  • PhD in Doctoral Programme in Electrical and Computer Engineering

    The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP) offers a Doctoral Programme in Electrical and Computer Engineering (PDEEC), covering the major areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering. A set of advanced mandatory and elective courses are offered during the first year, organized in two semesters. Typically the programme requires 8 courses of 7.5 ECTS, and advanced research work to be submitted and defended as a PhD thesis.

  • PhD in Offshore Renewable Energy (Engineering Doctorate)

    The Universities of Edinburgh, Strathclyde and Exeter together with the Scottish Association for Marine Science and HR-Wallingford have formed a partnership to deliver the RCUK/ETI Industrial Doctorate Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy (IDCORE).

  • PhD in Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Energy Systems

    Promoted by FEUP in cooperation with FCUL, ISEG, IST, together with the MIT, the PhD program consists in one curricular year (60 ECTS) and two to three years of research leading to a dissertation (120 ECTS) and grants the degree of Doctor in Sustainable Energy Systems. TARGET STUDENTS The courses are open for: • M.Sc. graduates in Mechanical, Electrical and Environmental Engineering or in other areas recognized as relevant by the Scientific Commission of the programme. • Graduates in Mechanical, Electrical and Environmental Engineering or in other areas recognized as relevant by the Scientific Commission of the programme. CURRICULAR PLAN The official curricular plan of the SES PhD program is currently under restructuring. 3 graduation profiles have been defined: • Energy Systems Planning (Engineering and Economics). • Sustainable Built Environment. • Advanced Electric Networks.

  • PhD in Doctoral Programme in Engineering and Public Policy

    The Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) is launching, in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University and in the context of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program, a new Doctoral Program in Engineering and Public Policy (EPP). This Doctoral Program is a new, interdisciplinary program focused on the technological and policy issues that arise when designing, developing, regulating, implementing and managing networked infrastructures. This new, interdisciplinary program addresses technological and policy issues that arise when designing, developing, regulating, implementing and managing networked infrastructures. Although the initial emphasis is on the Energy and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) fields, the broad range of problems to be tackled includes: Policy and Risk-Related Studies; New Technological Paradigms; Security and Privacy Policy; Electricity Infrastructure; Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles; Energy and Environment Policy; Net Neutrality; Spectrum Management Policy;

  • PhD in Engineering Doctorate/ Professional Doctorate in Digital Media

    The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) at the Centre for Digital Entertainment (CDE) is a collaboration between the University of Bath and Bournemouth University. It offers the opportunity to conduct research in an industrial context. Industrial collaborators come from the fields of computer games, VFX, image processing, graphics and animation. The program lasts 4 years, of which 3 will be spent in a company engaged on research projects, one on Masters level courses.

  • PhD in Optics & Photonics

    The 3-year PhD programme comprises the research project leading to a Ph.D. thesis as well as additional compulsory modules, work-groups and optional lecture courses, all of which offer a highly challenging, useful and interesting education programme.
