Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour. The discipline examines the role of mental functions in individual and social behavior, while also exploring the physiological and neurobiological processes that trigger certain functions and behaviours. The immediate goal in psychology is to understand humanity by both discovering general principles and exploring specific cases. Many practitioners of applied psychology believe that one of the objectives of the field is to benefit society. Psychologists investigate such concepts as perception, cognition, attention, emotion, phenomenology, motivation, brain functioning, personality, behavior and interpersonal relationships.
While psychological knowledge is typically applied to the assessment and treatment of mental health problems, it is also applied to understanding and solving problems in many different spheres of human activity. Following a degree in psychology, you can choose to be involved in some kind of therapeutic role (clinical, counseling, and school positions). Alternatively, you can do scientific research on a wide range of topics related to mental processes and social behavior (typically in university psychology departments) and/or teach such knowledge in academic settings. Also, working in industrial and organizational settings in relevant roles (e.g., human resources or training and employee development) is an option for those with a degree in the field.

Members of the Department’s team carry out biological and clinical research that we believe will have an important impact upon our understanding of dementia and other mental illnesses that affect older people and lead to the development of better treatments. We do this by working in close collaboration with the IoP’s Department of Neuroscience, MRC Centre for Neurodegeneration and NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health. Our research into the basic biology of Alzheimer’s disease, the clinical features and aetiology of psychosis in later life and the conduct of randomised controlled trials is internationally regarded. We have a particular commitment to the conduct of high quality independent clinical trials because the results of these can impact positively upon the availability of effective treatments.
The University of Manchester
Audiological research is based within the internationally recognised Audiology and Deafness Research Group, based in the School of Psychological Sciences. The group is the UK leader for applied research in audiology and deafness that has a significant impact upon service delivery in the UK and abroad. The impact of the group's research and subsequent knowledge transfer on service development (e.g. the NHS newborn hearing screening programme; digital signal-processing hearing aids and the modernisation of NHS hearing aid services) is highly significant, and is one of the features that distinguishes the group from other UK academic departments of audiology.
