Contents

The minimum research period for a PhD is 3 years full-time and 6 years part-time.

During your period of research, you will have two supervisors.

At the end of your research period you will be expected to have completed an extended thesis of up to 100,000 words, demonstrating evidence of your capacity to pursue scholarly research independently. The thesis must make an original contribution to knowledge and be of a standard appropriate for publication in a quality, peer-reviewed learned journal of international standing. You would normally expect a PhD thesis to contain the equivalent of at least three articles publishable in such a journal. You will also be required to defend your thesis at an oral examination or 'viva' normally conducted by two examiners, usually one internal and one external to the University.

Postgraduate study is demanding. You need a clear understanding of your discipline and the contribution you intend to make. Whatever your chosen field you will require research skills, but you will also need to develop a wider range of personal transferable skills. We will get you off to a good start at the outset and throughout your studies with the University's Research Training Programme.

Professional developmentThe Programme is open to all full- and part-time students registered for higher degrees by thesis. The courses provide training which is relevant for the professional development of postgraduates, and is intended to complement the discipline specific training offered by the Business School. The skills you will acquire are intended to help your research at Durham and also to enhance your life skills and employability.

We will complement your discipline specific training by offering workshops and courses covering

* Research skills and techniques
* The research environment
* Research management
* Personal effectiveness
* Communication skills
* Networking and teamworking
* Career management.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
