The Doctoral Programme aims to train experts equipped with wide and in-depth scientific and economic education, and a proven original research activity about climate change dynamics and techniques for its assessment and management.

The educational activities included in this Programme are held in English. The Programme may be broken down into two different curricula: one called ‘dynamic’ and the other ‘political’. They include common educational activities aiming to create a sound scientific and economic background for general understanding of climate change, together with specific educational activities depending upon the curriculum chosen by the doctoral student.

Objectives of the PhD

Unive and CMCC joined their efforts to launch a joint PhD Program in order to provide the job market with experts with a broad, in-depth, scientific and socio-economic background, as well as with a sound and innovative research experience focusing on the dynamics of climate change and the methodologies and techniques for evaluation and management, in terms of mitigation and adaptation measures and policies.

Contents

The Program is organised in two Streams:

  • Dynamic Climatology, at CMCC in Bologna
  • Climate change impact and management, at the Department of Economics of the University Ca’ Foscari in Venice

Twelve 5-credit courses are planned for the first academic year, in order to provide students with the state of the art of the scientific findings related to the two disciplinary streams. These also foresee common activities with the objective of offering tools to build a sound scientific, managerial and economic base for the general comprehension of the broader theme of climate change, with the opportunity for in depth studies of specific issues and for experiencing a multidisciplinary approach.

The second year is aimed at providing the PhD candidates with an experience of research in a foreign institution, while the third year is mainly devoted to the preparation of the thesis.

The PhD admits every year up to twelve students, from Italy and elsewhere.

Research subjects

  • In-depth analysis of the climate system and its different components (qualitative approach);
  • in-depth analysis of climate-related issues for the understanding of climate physics and its variability: process studies and real cases related to atmospheric/ocean dynamics in key regions;
  • study of climate theories and trends in far-off and recent times, sudden climate changes, extreme phenomena and natural disasters;
  • identification of physical, chemical and biological indicators for reconstruction of past climate aspects and analysis of current climate aspects and their variability;
  • analysis of economic systems reactions to climate shocks, through computational general economic equilibrium models;
  • creation of global integrated climate/economy-related models; analysis of the geographical distribution of costs of climate changes and mitigation policies;
  • creation of models for study of emission permit markets and their potential integrations;
  • in-depth analysis of environmental issues for the understanding of impacts and risks of climate changes on natural ecosystems and human health;
  • creation of decision-making support systems for the management of impacts and risks related to climate change.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
