The Department of Classics and Ancient History has consistently received a high rating for the quality of its research; it ranks among the best in Britain and has an international reputation. Its staff undertake research work across the whole field of classical studies and ancient history, and pioneered the study in Britain of classical reception. A major AHRC-funded research project, 'Thucydides: reception, reinterpretation and influence', commenced in 2009, while a project on Augustine's City of God continues. The Department is also collaborating in the Faculty's AHRC-funded Penguin Archive Project.
Research is undertaken within the Institute of Greece, Rome and the Classical Tradition, which provides a focus for collaborative and interdisciplinary work and support for conferences and other research activities. The Institute embraces research from many fields, including history of all kinds, archaeology, literary studies, art history and philosophy, and is particularly interested in exploring links between the ancient and modern. The Department is also closely associated with the University Research Theme on Reception, and individual members of staff are involved with research groups on Medieval Studies, Colonialism and Identities.
