The Department of German is committed to fostering research across a broad spectrum of German Studies, covering many aspects of language and linguistics, literature, history and culture, from the Middle Ages to the present day. There are particular strengths in medieval and modern literature (especially the classical age and classical modernity), German sociolinguistics and historical linguistics, German and Austrian history and politics since 1800 (particularly the GDR), and German children's literature.
Research Groups The Department includes a founder member of the international Historical Sociolinguistics Network (HiSoN), which seeks to foster interdisciplinary research between linguistics and historians, and sponsors regular summer schools at postgraduate level and beyond. The Department's collaborative research in both linguistics and East German studies is currently supported by AHRC-funded Networks for work in 'History and Language, Linguistics and Historians' (2008-9), and 'After the Wall: Reconstructing and Representing the GDR' (2009-10). All staff are also actively involved in interdisciplinary research at School and Faculty level in, for example, Medieval Studies, Conflict and Culture, Testimonies, Text and Image studies and the intersection between literature and history/historiography.
The Department welcomes applications from students wishing to pursue tailor-made research to Master's or doctoral level in any of the above areas. It integrates all its postgraduates into a programme of research events extending from informal fortnightly discussion groups to annual series of colliquia, workshops and lectures. Postgraduates may also benefit from the Department's strong links with Hannover and other universities and research centres in Germany such as the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel.
