The Department has full-time academic staff whose interests and expertise cover a wide range of subjects in the areas of modern Spanish literature, Spanish history, Latin American Studies, Portuguese, Brazilian, and Postcolonial Lusophone Studies, and Cultural Studies. Individual research supervision is available within the Department in these areas, some aspects of which (eg Colonialism, Medieval Studies) are also Faculty of Arts Research Themes which link with the work of groups at Faculty level. The Department has an active publications programme, including the Bristol Occasional Papers pamphlet series, Lusophone Studies, and the HiPLAM book series.
The Department welcomes applications from students wishing to pursue tailor-made research to Master's or Doctoral level. All postgraduates are integrated into a very vigorous programme of research seminars, and also into the research activities of the Department, the School of Modern Languages and the Faculty.
Research Groups Depending on the precise field, research within the Department may be based on the work of individual staff, or on collaboration between them, or may involve collaboration in wider groups, eg at Faculty level. Examples of the latter include Colonialism, in which Dr Williams and Dr Brown also work as part of that Faculty of Arts research theme, and Medieval Studies, where Professor Hook is involved in the Centre for Medieval Studies, also a Faculty research theme.
