The Department of History has more than 20 members of staff whose research interests range very widely. Particular strengths lie in medieval history, early modern history, and in modern, political, social, economic and environmental history, public history, East Asian and international history and history of colonialism and imperialism.
Formal links are maintained with the Universities of Bordeaux, Giessen, Hannover and Nanjing. The Department has strong links with the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol, as well as Bristol-based film-makers.
Research Groups Members of the Department participate in a number of the Faculty of Arts' research themes and research Centres, most notably Medieval Cultures, Reception and Colonialism.
The Medieval Cultures theme brings together researchers in History and the other Humanities to pursue and promote projects, which focus on the culture and cultural impact of the European Middle Ages.
The Reception theme combines scholars in Classics and Ancient History, with those in Medieval and Early Modern History, English and other Literatures with a common interest in the Classical Tradition and its reception in the post-Classical World.
The Colonialism theme draws together researchers throughout (and beyond) the Arts Faculty to pursue research into the history of colonialism and its legacies.
Members of the Department are also the directors of several AHRC- and ESRC-funded research projects. Recent projects include: Ireland-Bristol Trade in the Sixteenth Century (ESRC: 2006-8); The History of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service (AHRC, 2003-7); The Image of the Druid in Britain, 1500-2000 (AHRC, 2003-6); The Official History of the Civil Service Since Fulton (2000-8), the Penguin Archive project (AHRC, 2008-12).
