Research leading to the PhD, MPhil, MLitt or MMus in the Department of Music may be conducted either in Musicology (including historical musicology, reception studies etc) or Composition (acoustic or electro-acoustic).
The Department of Music has a particular strength in British Music. Founded by Professor Stephen Banfield and currently headed by Professor John Pickard, the Centre for the History of Music in Britain, the Empire and Commonwealth (CHOMBEC) incorporates work on regional, national and international aspects. Other musicological interests of the department include Soviet and Russian Music, Music and Film, Music Theatre, the British symphonic tradition, Chant and Medieval Music. Distinctive features include acoustic work from solo to symphonic scale, the interface of human and machine in electro-acoustic work, and a wide network of opportunities for professional and amateur performance.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
