The principal research areas of the Department of Philosophy are:
* Philosophy of science, including biology, logic, mathematics, medicine, physics, and psychology
* Philosophy of mind and language
* Formal epistemology and decision theory
* Moral and Political Philosophy
* History of philosophy, especially ancient philosophy and early modern philosophy
With 13 permanent members of staff, many post-doctoral researchers and visitors, and strong links with colleagues in many other departments including economics, law, mathematics, physics, psychology and politics we have a large philosophical community and a vibrant research culture. Individual members of staff have been highly successful in attracting external and internal research awards, including three Philip Leverhulme Prizes, five AHRC Research Leave Awards, one Mind Association Research Fellowship, and two Bristol University Research Fellowships. We hold a variety of regular research seminars and conferences.
The Department hosts the highly regarded British Journal for the Philosophy of Science. In addition to the weekly departmental research seminars, there are regular seminars in philosophy and history of science, incorporating joint seminars with the Physics, Psychology and Mathematics Departments.
We offer a two year MLitt programme and a three year PhD programme. Normally all students are registered for the MLitt and are upgraded to PhD after the assessment of written work plus interview in the second year.
A feature of our postgraduate research programmes is the range and quantity of philosophical activity supported by the Department. Each week we have a staff and postgraduate research seminar with visiting speakers; a philosophy and history of science, medicine, mathematics, and logic seminar, also with visiting speakers; a lunchtime work-in-progress seminar with internal staff and postgraduate speakers; and a postgraduate-only work-in-progress seminar. We host several workshops and conferences each semester, and the postgraduate students organise their own conference with postgraduate and invited speakers.
