The Russian Department at Bristol has maintained an outstanding record of research over many years. This is reflected in the judgements of successive RAE panels since the inception of the process. It has a strong and extremely active research culture, and the research interests of staff span a broad range of disciplinary emphases.
The Department is able to support postgraduate research in many areas within the following broad fields:
* 19th- and 20th-century Russian prose fiction
* 19th- and 20th-century Russian poetry
* 19th- and early 20th-century Russian intellectual history
* 20th-century Russian drama and theatre
* Russian and Soviet cinema and animation
* Contemporary Russian culture, including media and advertising
* 19th- and 20th-century Czech and Slovak literature
* Russian and comparative literature
* Russian Orthodox culture
The Department contributes to School and Faculty research themes, for instance Romanticism, Conflict and Culture, and Testimonies and has strong connections with research centres in Russia. The Department integrates postgraduates into regular staff-student research seminars, and also into the research activities of the School of Modern Languages and the Faculty.
