The Bristol Centre for Complexity Sciences (BCCS) is a highly interdisciplinary centre for training and research funded by the EPSRC. The four-year postgraduate course aims to integrate, strengthen and expand the knowledge and expertise in different areas of science and engineering to form a unique training environment for the most promising students from the UK and overseas.
Complexity Science deals with large networks of many smaller elements that interact to produce behaviour that cannot be predicted by looking at just one or two elements. You will be exposed to cutting-edge theoretical techniques (in mathematics, statistics and computer science) as well as lectures in relevant application areas. The integrated four-year programme consists of a one-year taught MRes degree followed by a three-year PhD degree, jointly supervised by experts from both the 'theoretical' and 'application' areas.
The Centre brings together expertise from across the University, in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, Geography, Mathematics, Neuroscience and Physics. It is anticipated that you will have a background in one of these areas with strong mathematical and computational skills.
Theory Research Areas
The BCCS programme draws on key relevant expertise in mathematics, statistics and computer science. Topics include:
* Computational modelling of complex systems
* Computational pattern analysis
* Control theory
* Game theory and interacting systems
* Graphical models and complex stochastic systems
* Information theory and computational complexity
* Network theory and graph theory
* Nonlinear dynamics
* Self-replication in stochastic modelling and inference
Application Research Areas

* Communications
* Exabyte Informatics
* Systems Engineering
Life Sciences
* Biology
* Neuroscience
* Protein structure, assembly and function
Molecular Sciences
* Chemical Reactivity
* Global Climate Change
* Nanoscale Complexity
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testEntry requirements
A good undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, at a level equivalent to a first or upper second class UK degree.
Language requirements
An IELTS score of 6.5. We also accept other language tests; please see our website for details.
