The EngD Centre in Systems, a collaboration between Bristol and Bath universities, offers a four-year programme with research and taught units. The EngD is intended for the UK's most able research engineers who will be tomorrow's industry leaders. An alternative to the PhD, the EngD is vocationally oriented to suit industry's needs. EngD students spend about 75% of their time working in a company on collaborative research projects.
Taught Programme Structure
The taught units covered in the first two years consist of eight core units and two elective units. In the first year, the core units are:
* Introduction to Systems
* Research Methods 1
* Mathematics for Systems
* Commercialisation of New Technology
In the second year, the core units are:
* Advanced Systems
* Research Methods 2
* Technology, Strategy and Organisation
* Integrating Engineering and Management Systems
One elective unit is taken in the first year and one in the second year, all selected from a wide range of options.
Research Groups
The research project spans the whole programme. The topic must apply Systems models in any area covered by Bristol's Faculty of Engineering, Bath's School of Management or Bath's Faculty of Engineering.
The focus of the EngD is managing systems for enhanced performance. This is a 'holistic' approach to engineering based on systems thinking, which overlaps with other research topics and which can be applied to social, environmental, business or manufactured systems. Current projects include structural safety, systems vulnerability, risk management, rethinking construction and best practice, water and environmental management, condition monitoring, the mathematics of uncertainty and the philosophy of engineering.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testEntry requirements
A minimum of an upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Applicants without a recognised degree may be accepted if they can demonstrate significant industrial experience. All applicants will be interviewed and should demonstrate leadership potential.
Language requirements
An IELTS score of 6.5. We also accept other language tests; please see our website for details.
