The School of Biological Sciences is recognised as a centre of international and national research excellence. Research interests extend from populations through whole organisms to studies at the levels of singel cells and genes. Our work encompasses work on plants (including crops), animals and microbes. We have major interests in animal behavious, conservation, ecology, evolution, responses to environmental variables, paratisology, development, sensory biology, neurobiology, intrecellular signalling and the biology of disease. Our research includes theoratical, laboratoty and field-based science and agricultural work is pursued through the Lady Emily Smyth Agricultural Research Station embedded within the School.
Research Groups
Research is focused in three main areas, with many collaborative links between groups.
The Behaviour, Sensory and Neurobiology Group is interested in understanding the adaptive significance and mechanisms of behaviour, from underlying neurobiology ('how', or proximate, questions) through to evolutionary explanations of function ('why', or ultimate, questions).
The Ecological and Evolutionary Processes Group undertakes internationally recognised research aimed at understanding the relations between organisms (plant, animal or microbe) at individual, population and community levels, and between organisms and their environments.
The Plant and Pathogen Biology Group. Work in this group includes crop genomics, plant development and intracellualr signalling, biotechnology, fungal biology, nematode biology and parasitology.
