The scholarship programme aims to support outstandingly qualified young scientists in attending German universities to acquire Master´s degrees or PhDs that are international in outlook, related to water technologies, and taught in English.
Up to now there are:
20 accredited universities in Germany
300 scholarship holders and alumni (Master and PhD) from 55 countries worldwide. Scholarship holders, besides a comprehensive mentoring, are provided with contacts to the German water tecnology sector, institutions of the German development cooperation, German alumni networks, internships in German companies. The programme organizes annual meetings for the scholarship holders in order to exchange on their research and to offer contact to German institutions. Applicants must apply to the course director of the Master´s programme of one of the accredited universities or to the PhD supervisor; if accepted, the course director or supervisor recommends the applicant to the International Bureau of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research; all the applications will be assessed by an independent panel of experts twice a year (march and october).

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testTo apply for an IPSWaT scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Bachelor´s degree (if applying for a Master´s degree scholarship) or Master´s Degree (if applying for a PhD scholarship) in a water-related field
- Good to very good English skills (paper-based TOEFL: at least 550 points, computer-based TOEFL: at least 213 points; Internet-based TOEFL: at least 79 points); knowledge of German is an advantage
- A supervisor at one of the accredited IPSWaT courses in Germany must have agreed to supervise the proposed Master´s degree / PhD work in the event that a scholarship is granted (see for a list of accredited courses). To this end, the candidate must independently contact one of the courses/supervisors and obtain consent/a recommendation in advance.
If the candidate fulfils all criteria, he/she can apply for an IPSWaT scholarship by submitting the following documents:
- Detailed description of the planned research work
- Letter of individual motivation, including a description of the relevance of the expected results to the candidate´s home region or to future scientific or economic cooperation with Germany
- Full CV/resume without gaps
- Copies of all academic certificates/transcripts
- Copies of references from professional work and qualifications
- At least one reference from a university professor, ideally also from the prospective supervisor in Germany
- Proof of English skills (for non-native speakers of English), TOEFL (see above)
