Location of University of Cyprus

Duration: The minimum period of study is six (6) academic semesters and the maximum period of study is sixteen (16) academic semesters.

The postgraduate programmes of each department are supervised by a three-member Postgraduate Programmes Committee, chaired by a Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator.The Coordinator may be the chairperson of the department or a member of the academic staff appointed by the chairperson. The other members of the committee are appointed by the Departmental Board. The Committee is appointed for a two-year term.

For every student in the Postgraduate Programme, the department appoints an Academic Supervisor, whereas at the research stage of the Ph.D. a Research Supervisor is appointed. Candidate students select a member of the academic staff to act as their Research Supervisor. The student´s choice must be approved by the Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator. The Research Supervisor guides the students in their research and provides the necessary help and advice.

The programmes of study of the University of Cyprus are based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). An ECTS normally corresponds to a 25-30 hours workload per semester. Full-time status requires a courseload of 21 ECTS per semester. Students carrying fewer ECTS are considered part-time.


Contents

For the fulfillment of a Doctoral degree in Statistics, the following are required:

1. Successful completion of 60 ECTS at postgraduate level, in accordance with the provisions of the programme of studies of the Department. Students with a Master degree are partially or fully exempted from this requirement.The 60 ECTS should be completed as follows:

o At least 10 ECTS in Probability Theory.

o At least 10 ECTS in Statistical Theory.

o The remaining 40 ECTS may be completed with any postgraduate courses offered by the Department, including reading courses.

2. Comprehensive Examination (CE): Ph.D. candidates are examined on the areas of Probability Theory and Statistical Theory. If the candidates succeed in both areas, they are considered to have the necessary knowledge to proceed to the Ph.D. If they fail only in one area, they are entitled to repeat the part of the examination on which they failed only once, in a later examination period.

3. Oral Examination: The candidate for the Ph.D. must present a research proposal for a Doctoral Thesis before a three-member committee. The presentation takes place at the latest one year after the admission of the student as a doctoral candidate.

4. Doctoral Thesis: A doctoral thesis can be submitted only after the completion of at least four semesters in the postgraduate programme at Ph.D. level, and after the student has successfully completed the comprehensive examination and obtained the required ECTS.

5. Defence of the Thesis: Defence of the thesis takes place before a five-member committee.

Requirements

Requirements for Ph.D. Degree * Class attendance for a minimum of six semesters. The Ph.D. requirements must be fulfilled within the period of sixteen semesters from the day of admission to the postgraduate programme.
* Successful completion of a minimum of 240 ECTS (completion of 60 ECTS at the postgraduate level, in accordance with the provisions of the relevant programme of studies of the department (holders of a Master or equivalent degree may be partially or fully exempted from this requirement). The research part of the programme counts as 120 ECTS and the remaining ECTS refer to the comprehensive examination, the presentation of the dissertation proposal, the writing of the dissertation, etc.)
* Success in a comprehensive examination in the fifth semester of studies at the latest. The nature and assessment of the comprehensive examination are determined by the relevant department.
* Defense of a dissertation.

Comprehensive Examination: Ph.D. students are required to successfully pass a comprehensive examination in the fifth semester of studies at the latest. The nature and assessment of the comprehensive examination are determined by the relevant department.

Admission to Postgraduate Programmes

The number of postgraduate students to be admitted is announced separately for each specific programme at theMaster or Doctorate level.

The criteria for evaluation and ranking of the candidates are the following:

o Prior university training in an appropriate field of study and a transcript of the degree. Appropriate fields of study are Mathematics, Statistics or other related subjects such as Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, etc.

o Recommendation letters (at least two) from university professors

o Personal interview (if necessary)

o Other qualifications, such as exams, awards, distinctions, etc.o Sufficient knowledge of the English language (recommended)

o Candidates with insufficient knowledge of mathematics will be required to attend a number of undergraduate courses, in addition to those required by the regulations of the Department.

Application forms must be submitted to the Postgraduate Studies Coordinator of the relevant department by the 15th of April of each year for entry in the fall semester and by the 31st of October for entry in the spring semester.

Applicants must have a University degree awarded by an accredited institution in the country where it operates, or a degree evaluated as equivalent to a University degree by the Cyprus Council for the Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications (KY.S.A.T.S). Individuals who will be awarded a University degree or Graduation certificate fulfilling the necessary criteria by the end of the week that precedes registration week, are also eligible to submit an application form.
