Location of University of Cyprus
Duration: The minimum period of study is six (6) academic semesters and the maximum period of study is sixteen (16) academic semesters.
The postgraduate programmes of each department are supervised by a three-member Postgraduate Programmes Committee, chaired by a Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator.The Coordinator may be the chairperson of the department or a member of the academic staff appointed by the chairperson. The other members of the committee are appointed by the Departmental Board. The Committee is appointed for a two-year term.
For every student in the Postgraduate Programme, the department appoints an Academic Supervisor, whereas at the research stage of the Ph.D. a Research Supervisor is appointed. Candidate students select a member of the academic staff to act as their Research Supervisor. The student´s choice must be approved by the Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator. The Research Supervisor guides the students in their research and provides the necessary help and advice.
The programmes of study of the University of Cyprus are based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). An ECTS normally corresponds to a 25-30 hours workload per semester. Full-time status requires a courseload of 21 ECTS per semester. Students carrying fewer ECTS are considered part-time.

Requirements for Ph.D. Degree * Class attendance for a minimum of six semesters. The Ph.D. requirements must be fulfilled within the period of sixteen semesters from the day of admission to the postgraduate programme.
* Successful completion of a minimum of 240 ECTS (completion of 60 ECTS at the postgraduate level, in accordance with the provisions of the relevant programme of studies of the department (holders of a Master or equivalent degree may be partially or fully exempted from this requirement). The research part of the programme counts as 120 ECTS and the remaining ECTS refer to the comprehensive examination, the presentation of the dissertation proposal, the writing of the dissertation, etc.)
* Success in a comprehensive examination in the fifth semester of studies at the latest. The nature and assessment of the comprehensive examination are determined by the relevant department.
* Defense of a dissertation.
Comprehensive Examination: Ph.D. students are required to successfully pass a comprehensive examination in the fifth semester of studies at the latest. The nature and assessment of the comprehensive examination are determined by the relevant department.
Postgraduate students in the Doctoral Programme must pass the five (5) compulsory core courses and one (1) specialization course. After the successful completion of these six (6) postgraduate courses, the candidate must pass a comprehensive examination. Candidates must also take at least 40 ECTS in courses in addition to the five (5) core courses. These courses should comprise specialization courses relevant to their field, as well as at least one course outside their area of specialization. The possession of an M.Sc. degree partially or completely exempts students from the required completion of the above 90 ECTS. The final requirement for the Doctorate degree is the submission of an original thesis. After the completion of the thesis, students will defend their work before a five-member committee.

Requirements
Admission Requirements:
Generally, applicants for admission at Ph.D. level must hold a Master degree (or equivalent), awarded by a recognized University, in a subject related to their proposed field of study; alternatively, they must show evidence of their ability to conduct research. Although candidates need not have completed their degree at the time of application, they must have received it before they are allowed to commence the postgraduate programmes.
Application forms must be submitted to the Postgraduate Studies Coordinator of the relevant department by the 15th of April of each year for entry in the fall semester and by the 31st of October for entry in the spring semester.
Applicants must have a University degree awarded by an accredited institution in the country where it operates, or a degree evaluated as equivalent to a University degree by the Cyprus Council for the Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications (KY.S.A.T.S). Individuals who will be awarded a University degree or Graduation certificate fulfilling the necessary criteria by the end of the week that precedes registration week, are also eligible to submit an application form.Applications should include the following:

* Two signed letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes. Some departments require three reference letters, so before submitting your application, please read the Postgraduate Prospectus and any relevant departmental prospectus to ascertain the required number of reference letters. The Department may request additional confidential information from the referees. You may also consult the department webside.
* Copies of university degrees or a statement of expected graduation in the month preceding enrolment in the postgraduate programme.
* Transcript/s as appropriate.
* Curriculum vitae
* A short statement (maximum two pages) of the student's research goals and interests.
Criteria for assessment of applicants:
The criteria for assessment of postgraduate candidates are the following:
* Academic background in the appropriate discipline and grades in other related degrees.
* Letters of recommendation.
* Personal interview at the discretion of each department.
* Written examination at the discretion of each department.
* Other criteria set by each department.
