Location of University of Cyprus

Duration: The minimum period of study is six (6) academic semesters and the maximum period of study is sixteen (16) academic semesters.

The postgraduate programmes of each department are supervised by a three-member Postgraduate Programmes Committee, chaired by a Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator.The Coordinator may be the chairperson of the department or a member of the academic staff appointed by the chairperson. The other members of the committee are appointed by the Departmental Board. The Committee is appointed for a two-year term.

The programmes of study of the University of Cyprus are based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). An ECTS normally corresponds to a 25-30 hours workload per semester. Full-time status requires a courseload of 21 ECTS per semester. Students carrying fewer ECTS are considered part-time.


Contents

To obtain the doctoral degree in law, candidates must:

* Possess a Master degree in law in the relevant field, or a similar one
* Successfully pass the comprehensive examination
* Prepare, submit and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation.

For each doctoral candidate, a Research Advisor (doctoral supervisor) is appointed by the Department Council. Possession of a Master degree, or equivalent, in International Law or European Law, is deemed to satisfy the programme´s requirements and to exempt the student from any obligation to attend courses. The Committee may howeverrequire a candidate to attend a Master course, if this is considered necessary for, or useful to the development of the candidate´s research.In the context of the doctoral programme, students will present their research proposal or parts of their thesis at a Colloquium, attended by Department faculty, doctoral candidates, postgraduate students, and invited guests.

In general the Requirements for Ph.D. Degree are the following:

* Class attendance for a minimum of six semesters. The Ph.D. requirements must be fulfilled within the period of sixteen semesters from the day of admission to the postgraduate programme.
* Successful completion of a minimum of 240 ECTS (completion of 60 ECTS at the postgraduate level, in accordance with the provisions of the relevant programme of studies of the department (holders of a Master or equivalent degree may be partially or fully exempted from this requirement). The research part of the programme counts as 120 ECTS and the remaining ECTS refer to the comprehensive examination, the presentation of the dissertation proposal, the writing of the dissertation, etc.)
* Success in a comprehensive examination in the fifth semester of studies at the latest. The nature and assessment of the comprehensive examination are determined by the relevant department.
* Defense of a dissertation.

Doctoral Dissertation Proposal

During their first semester of study in the doctoral programme, candidates will focus on their preliminary research, which will lead to a detailed proposal of a doctoral dissertation that will be submitted to a three-member committee at the end of the semester.

Comprehensive Examination

By the fifth semester of study, candidates must have successfully passed their comprehensive examination, which is set by the Department.

Doctoral Dissertation

An original doctoral dissertation is a fundamental condition of the programme. The dissertation must be an original contribution to the candidate´s field of study.The doctoral dissertation may be written in a language other than Greek provided that: (a) the candidate gives adequate justification and (b) the supervisor is in agreement. The dissertation is defended in public before a five-member examination committee.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Admission to the Doctoral Programme

* Candidates must possess a postgraduate degree in Law from a recognized university.
* Exceptionally, graduates of Political Sciences and International or European Studies may be admitted to the "International Law" orientation, by decision of the Committee on Graduate Studies.
* Law graduates from Greek universities must have a "very good" ( ) grade point average. Law graduates from UK universities must have at least second-class honors. Lawgraduates from other universities must have equivalent degrees and grades. Graduates in other subjects must have a grade point average over 7.5/10 (or upper second-class or equivalent) andshow evidence of their satisfactory understanding of legal concepts and institutions in an oral examination. Exceptionally, by unanimous decision, the Committee may decide to admitlaw graduates with lower degree grades and notable professional achievement.
* Very good knowledge of English is required for admission.
* Knowledge of a second, or a third, European language will be taken into consideration.

The final decision on admission in the postgraduate programme is made by the Committee on Graduate Studies, which evaluates the candidates. The Committee may invite applicants who fulfil all admission criteria to an interview or a written examination.

* Application Form
* Two signed letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes. Some departments require three reference letters, so before submitting your application, please read the Postgraduate Prospectus and any relevant departmental prospectus to ascertain the required number of reference letters. The Department may request additional confidential information from the referees. You may also consult the department webside.
* Copies of university degrees or a statement of expected graduation in the month preceding enrolment in the postgraduate programme.
* Transcript/s as appropriate.
* Curriculum vitae
* A short statement (maximum two pages) of the student's research goals and interests.

Criteria for assessment of applicants: The criteria for assessment of postgraduate candidates are the following: * Academic background in the appropriate discipline and grades in other related degrees.
* Letters of recommendation.
* Personal interview at the discretion of each department.
* Written examination at the discretion of each department.
* Other criteria set by each department.
