Location of University of Cyprus

Duration: The minimum period of study is six (6) academic semesters and the maximum period of study is sixteen (16) academic semesters.

The postgraduate programmes of each department are supervised by a three-member Postgraduate Programmes Committee, chaired by a Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator.The Coordinator may be the chairperson of the department or a member of the academic staff appointed by the chairperson. The other members of the committee are appointed by the Departmental Board. The Committee is appointed for a two-year term.

For every student in the Postgraduate Programme, the department appoints an Academic Supervisor, whereas at the research stage of the Ph.D. a Research Supervisor is appointed. Candidate students select a member of the academic staff to act as their Research Supervisor. The student´s choice must be approved by the Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator. The Research Supervisor guides the students in their research and provides the necessary help and advice.

The programmes of study of the University of Cyprus are based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). An ECTS normally corresponds to a 25-30 hours workload per semester. Full-time status requires a courseload of 21 ECTS per semester. Students carrying fewer ECTS are considered part-time.

Requirements and Structure of the PhD Programmes

In brief, the requirements and the structure of the PhD programmes are as follows:

* Research SupervisorL: A research supervisor, appointed by the Department Council, is required to guide the student toward the completion of the PhD dissertation.
* Course Attendance: The staff responsible for the course may advise any PhD candidate to follow courses from the MA programme if they consider this necessary for the PhD candidate´s research, and/or that doing so will help develop the research topic.
* Approval of PhD proposal: During the third semester of postgraduate study, PhD candidates conduct preliminary research, which will lead to a detailed PhD proposal.
* Comprehensive Examination: Each candidate is required to successfully complete a comprehensive written examination, no later than the fifth semester. The department organises these examinations every September.
* PhD Thesis: The completion of an original doctoral thesis is another requirement of the programme. The thesis must be an important contribution to the subject. The PhD thesis may be written in a language other than Greek if: a) the candidate´s first language is not Greek, and b) the research supervisor agrees.
* Defence of PhD Thesis: The thesis is defended before a five-member examining board.
* Duration of Study: A PhD degree may be completed in a minimum period of six (6) semesters and amaximumof sixteen (16) semesters starting from the date of admission.
* Successful Completion of 240 ECTS: Successful completion of 240 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) is required.

The credits break down as follows:

* Courses: Credited by the MA programme 60 ECTS
* Research: 4 semesters x 30 ECTS 120 ECTS
* Writing of postgraduate thesis: 2 semesters x 30 ECTS 60 ECTS

Requirements

Admission Requirements and Study RulesAdmission Requirements:

Generally, applicants for admission at Ph.D. level must hold a Master degree (or equivalent), awarded by a recognized University, in a subject related to their proposed field of study; alternatively, they must show evidence of their ability to conduct research. Although candidates need not have completed their degree at the time of application, they must have received it before they are allowed to commence the postgraduate programmes.

Application forms must be submitted to the Postgraduate Studies Coordinator of the relevant department by the 15th of April of each year for entry in the fall semester and by the 31st of October for entry in the spring semester.

Applicants must have a University degree awarded by an accredited institution in the country where it operates, or a degree evaluated as equivalent to a University degree by the Cyprus Council for the Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications (KY.S.A.T.S). Individuals who will be awarded a University degree or Graduation certificate fulfilling the necessary criteria by the end of the week that precedes registration week, are also eligible to submit an application form.

In addition to the general requirements, good knowledge of English is a prerequisite. Knowledge of a second European language will be considered an additional qualification. The annual number of entrants to the PhD programme is six (6).

It is also noted that according to the Admission and Attendance Regulations "within the framework of student exchange, a PhD student may spend up to one calendar year of study at a university abroad."

Submission of Application - Registration

Applications should include the following:

* Application Form
* Two signed letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes. Some departments require three reference letters, so before submitting your application, please read the Postgraduate Prospectus and any relevant departmental prospectus to ascertain the required number of reference letters. The Department may request additional confidential information from the referees. You may also consult the department webside.
* Copies of university degrees or a statement of expected graduation in the month preceding enrolment in the postgraduate programme.
* Transcript/s as appropriate.
* Curriculum vitae
* A short statement (maximum two pages) of the student's research goals and interests.

In addition to the general requirements, applicants must also consider the following:

(a) Candidates who have not yet completed their MA programme but are enrolled and are studying for the degree, may be accepted provided they complete their studies by the 31st of July of the year that they will be enrolling for the PhD course, following the approval of the Postgraduate Committee.

(b) Evidence (e.g., certificate) of good knowledge of the English language.

(c) A statement describing the candidate´s scholarly and research interests.

Criteria for assessment of applicants:The criteria for assessment of postgraduate candidates are the following: * Academic background in the appropriate discipline and grades in other related degrees.
* Letters of recommendation.
* Personal interview at the discretion of each department.
* Written examination at the discretion of each department.
* Other criteria set by each department.
