Location of University of Cyprus

Duration: The minimum period of study is six (6) academic semesters and the maximum period of study is sixteen (16) academic semesters.

The postgraduate programmes of each department are supervised by a three-member Postgraduate Programmes Committee, chaired by a Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator.The Coordinator may be the chairperson of the department or a member of the academic staff appointed by the chairperson. The other members of the committee are appointed by the Departmental Board. The Committee is appointed for a two-year term.

For every student in the Postgraduate Programme, the department appoints an Academic Supervisor, whereas at the research stage of the Ph.D. a Research Supervisor is appointed. Candidate students select a member of the academic staff to act as their Research Supervisor. The student´s choice must be approved by the Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator. The Research Supervisor guides the students in their research and provides the necessary help and advice.

The programmes of study of the University of Cyprus are based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). An ECTS normally corresponds to a 25-30 hours workload per semester. Full-time status requires a courseload of 21 ECTS per semester. Students carrying fewer ECTS are considered part-time.


Contents

For the fulfillment of a Doctor of Philosophy Degree the requirements are:

* Successful completion of 240 ECTS, corresponding to graduate courses (at least 56), seminars (at least 4), and research (at least 180). Students with an M.Sc. or equivalent degree may be partially exempt from the course requirements (up to 32 ECTS), after a recommendation by the Graduate Studies Committee, and subject to approval by the Department.
* Passing the Comprehensive Examination by the end of the second semester after completion of the M.Sc. degree (or equivalent coursework).
* Thesis Proposal. The candidate must submit a thesis proposal, outlining the proposed research project in a comprehensive and structured manner, at least 12months before the intended date of defence.
* Doctoral Dissertation.The dissertation must include significant research findings and must contain elements which testify to the candidate´s personal contribution.
* Defense of the Dissertation. The defence of the dissertation takes place before the thesis committee.

Requirements

Admission to Postgraduate Programmes

The Department admits new postgraduate students each year at the Master and Doctoral levels. The number of new admissions fluctuates each year and depends on the needs of the Department and the quality of the candidates.

Applications are submitted to the Department and are considered for evaluation by the Postgraduate Studies Committee which makes suggestions to the Departmental Board for final approval. Upon acceptance to the programme, students must choose one of the faculty members as their supervisor, whom they should consult on academic and research issues.

Admission Requirements:

Generally, applicants for admission at Ph.D. level must hold a Master degree (or equivalent), awarded by a recognized University, in a subject related to their proposed field of study; alternatively, they must show evidence of their ability to conduct research. Although candidates need not have completed their degree at the time of application, they must have received it before they are allowed to commence the postgraduate programmes.

Application forms must be submitted to the Postgraduate Studies Coordinator of the relevant department by the 15th of April of each year for entry in the fall semester and by the 31st of October for entry in the spring semester.

Applicants must have a University degree awarded by an accredited institution in the country where it operates, or a degree evaluated as equivalent to a University degree by the Cyprus Council for the Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications (KY.S.A.T.S). Individuals who will be awarded a University degree or Graduation certificate fulfilling the necessary criteria by the end of the week that precedes registration week, are also eligible to submit an application form.

In addition to the standard requirements of the University, the Department requires the following for admission:

* letters of recommendation (at least three) from academic or professional advisorso copies of indicative publications, if any (no more than three)
* If applicants have not completed their studies, a letter from the registrar of the students´ current university verifying the expected graduation dateo copies of any other supporting material such as exams, honours, awards, etc.

Applications may be submitted in either Greek or English.

The criteria for the evaluation of the candidates are the following:

* Two signed letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes. Some departments require three reference letters, so before submitting your application, please read the Postgraduate Prospectus and any relevant departmental prospectus to ascertain the required number of reference letters. The Department may request additional confidential information from the referees. You may also consult the department webside.
* Copies of university degrees or a statement of expected graduation in the month preceding enrolment in the postgraduate programme.
* Transcript/s as appropriate.
* Curriculum vitae
* A short statement (maximum two pages) of the student's research goals and interests.
