The Centre for Deaf Studies carries out research on a range of issues related to Deaf communities and sign language. The Centre's philosophy requires the partnership of hearing and Deaf people in achieving insight and progress. We encourage Deaf sign language users to apply for our programme as the research can be carried out in sign language as well as in text. Our mission is to advance the field of Deafhood in ways that both support the Deaf community worldwide and inform hearing researchers from a range of disciplines. In addition we expect to make our research policy-related.

Details of this programme are available in British Sign Language on our website.

Contents

The Centre has a long tradition of research in the UK and in collaboration with colleagues all over the world. This research is divided into five areas:

* Deafhood, Deaf Community, Culture and Folklore
* Education, Cognition and Psychological Well-being
* Sign Language, Applied Sign Linguistics
* Sign Language Acquisition
* Visual E-learning and Video Telecommunications

We have carried out funded research, produced reports and have hold significant data archives for each of these areas. A current focus is research on Deafhood, of which the Centre for Deaf Studies is the world leader. We are also working to increase the number and quality of Deaf academics.
