The Centre has a long tradition of research in the UK and in collaboration with colleagues all over the world. This research is divided into five areas:

* Deafhood, Deaf Community, Culture and Folklore
* Education, Cognition and Psychological Well-being
* Sign Language
* Sign Language acquisition
* Technological Applications

In each case we have carried out funded research, produced reports and have archives of data.

At any point in time, the shape and focus of this research will change and some areas will receive more attention than others. For example, a current focus is research around deafhood, of which the Centre for Deaf Studies is the world leader. However, we are committed to a framework of research with Deaf people, for the benefit of Deaf people and for the purpose of extending knowledge and theory in the academic discipline of Deaf Studies. We are also working to increase the number and quality of Deaf academics.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
