Duration: The minimum period of study is six (6) academic semesters and the maximum period of study is sixteen (16) academic semesters.
The postgraduate programmes of each department are supervised by a three-member Postgraduate Programmes Committee, chaired by a Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator.The Coordinator may be the chairperson of the department or a member of the academic staff appointed by the chairperson. The other members of the committee are appointed by the Departmental Board. The Committee is appointed for a two-year term.
For every student in the Postgraduate Programme, the department appoints an Academic Supervisor, whereas at the research stage of the Ph.D. a Research Supervisor is appointed. Candidate students select a member of the academic staff to act as their Research Supervisor. The student´s choice must be approved by the Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator. The Research Supervisor guides the students in their research and provides the necessary help and advice.
The programmes of study of the University of Cyprus are based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). An ECTS normally corresponds to a 25-30 hours workload per semester. Full-time status requires a courseload of 21 ECTS per semester. Students carrying fewer ECTS are considered part-time.

Admission Requirements: * A completed application form which can be obtained online.
* Postgraduate degree (MA/Mastère) in Byzantine Studies or other related fields. Submission of official degree transcripts required.
* Detailed résumé and research proposal.
* Sample of written work, namely the candidate's MA thesis on a topic in Byzantine Studies or a related field.
* Two letters of recommendation by specialists, preferably university faculty or other established scholars.
* In addition to Greek, satisfactory knowledge of two other languages from the remaining five international languages of Byzantine Studies (English, French, German, Italian and Russian). The submission of the related certificates (e.g. GCE A level or TOEFL for English [550 on the paper test, 213 on the computer test and 80 on the internet test], DELF - A1 - A2 - B1 - B2, TCF 400 for French and Mittelstufe for German) is required.
* If deemed necessary by the faculty of the PhD programme, the candidate may be invited to an interview.
Admission and Course Duration
The programme starts every September. The time frame for the successful completion of the PhD Programme cannot exceed eight academic years after admission.

1. Copies of university degrees, and of a postgraduate degree (for PhD studies), or statement of expected graduation in the summer preceding enrolment in the postgraduate programme. After admission the candidate will be asked to show the originals.
2. A transcript and a detailed list of the courses taken at the undergraduate level.
3. A saple of written work, namely an essay on a topic of the candidate`s choice in Byzantine Literature, History, Archaeology, History of Art, Classical Studies or another related field, or an MA thesis on a topic in Byzantine Studies or a related field (for PhD studies)
4. Certificates showing a satisfactory knowledge of two languages from the five international languages of Byzantine Studies (English, French, German, Italian and Russian).
5. The two letters of recommendation will be sent by the referees themselves to one of the two relevant departments. The academic reference instruction form can be downloaded from the programme's website, or obtained from the secretaries of the two relevant departments.
