The Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology emphasizes interdisciplinary and critical approaches to social issues. The integrated study of two disciplines fosters an environment that is conscious of the historicity of social science categories and theories, their meaning in different cultures, and engagement in the practical world.
Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology and Social Anthropology
The doctoral program encourages theoretically driven empirical research in a non parochial perspective on a variety of topics that are broadly related to the department’s expertise. A year of rigorous coursework is generally followed by a year of research and an extended period of writing.
