The PhD programme is completely research based. PhD theses have to contain new results in mathematical theory, mathematical modelling or numerical methods. The research topics are identified by the supervising professor. Although guided by the professor and supported by the working group, candidates must have the ability to independently pursue scientific work.
Each applicant must have an excellent Master's degree (or equivalent degree) in Mathematics. A good level of English must be proven by a TOEFL test with a score of at least 550/213/80 points or IELTS with band 6.
Knowledge of the German language is not a necessary prerequisite, but foreign students have to pass a German language test after one year. German language courses are offered, starting in August. Students who cannot attend these courses have to start to learn German in their home country.

Today, the attractive study programmes interest many students from more than 60 countries, creating an international atmosphere at the department.
