At the start of your programme you will draw up a plan for your research in consultation with your supervisor for completion of your thesis within the period of registration for the degree. This will include your research methods training programme.
The Doctoral School research training programme consists of core and specialist courses. The core courses provide a broad coverage of the central skills and ethical and methodological issues of educational research. The specialist and advanced courses provide greater depth in specialised skills, building on the knowledge gained from the core courses.
The PhD is intended to enable you to produce your own thesis and to develop a range of research and other more generic skills. PhD students come from all walks of life, and include recent graduates, teachers, lecturers, educational psychologists, sociologists, medical and health professionals, social work professionals, and educational professionals working in different branches and levels of government. Some are just starting their careers; many are senior members of their profession. Our students are undertaking research in a wide range of subjects within the field of education and related fields.
All students must normally register in the first instance for an MPhil and may subsequently seek transfer of registration to the PhD.
Programme of study
As an PhD/MPhil, you will be supported at four levels: through your supervisor; in your faculty; in the IOE-wide research training programme; and by your fellow students.
You will follow a programme of study under the guidance of your supervisor and an advisory panel. At the start of your programme you and your supervisor will draw up a plan for your research and the completion of your thesis. This will include your research methods training programme. You will review your personal development and training plan and your work plan annually.
Your training programme will consist of core and specialist courses, covering the central skills and ethical and methodological issues of educational research. It will:
- equip you with the understanding, skills and techniques to carry out your doctoral research project
- support you in completing your doctorate on schedule
- give you a broad understanding of research approaches and methods, which will enable you to comprehend a range of research papers in order to enhance your competence, and pursue future research activities
- give you the opportunity to develop a range of generic and transferable skills relevant to your wider professional and academic development.
You will be able to meet and discuss your work with students and staff from other faculties, and learn more about the personal and funded research taking place at the IOE.
At the end of the programme, your training portfolio will form a record of all the skills you have acquired. It will demonstrate to a sponsoring body or employer the areas of research training you have undertaken.
Length of programme
The minimum period of registration is two calendar years of full-time or three years of part-time study. However, we expect students to be registered for three calendar years of full-time or five calendar years of part-time study, and a longer period of registration may sometimes be required. The maximum registration period is four years for full-time students, and seven years for part-time students or those studying through a mixture of full-time and part-time attendance.
Residence requirements for international students
If you are an international student and you are unable to remain in residence for the whole of your programme of study, we must approve your proposed pattern of study before we can make you a formal offer of a place. You will need to agree with us the periods of time you will spend in residence in London, and state how you will meet the requirements of the programme.
Leave of absence for fieldwork
If your data collection includes fieldwork in another country, you can request approval to study away from the Institute for that period.
Assessment for PhD and MPhil degrees
Both degrees are assessed by thesis supplemented by oral examination. The maximum length of a PhD thesis is 80,000 words, and the maximum length of an MPhil thesis is 60,000 words. All PhD and MPhil candidates are examined via voce.
A PhD thesis must form a distinct contribution to the knowledge of the field of study and afford evidence of originality and a capacity for autonomous research. It must be suitable for publication, if necessary, in an abridged or modified form. An MPhil thesis consists of either a record of original investigation or of an ordered exposition of a field.
If it is appropriate to your field of study, you may (subject to approval from the academic registrar) submit a portfolio of original artistic or technological work, which may take the form of objects, images, films, performances, musical compositions, web pages, software, etc. This must be suitable for the purposes of examination and deposit in the IOE library. The portfolio should include a written commentary on each item of work, and either an extended analysis of one item or a dissertation on a related theme. The commentaries and analysis or dissertation must be no more than 40,000 words in total.
Transfer of registration from MPhil to PhD
Students normally register in the first instance for an MPhil and may subsequently seek transfer of their registration to the PhD degree. This usually takes place at the end of the first year if you are a full-time student, or during the second year if you are part-time.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testEntry Requirements The normal minimum requirement is an upper second-class honours degree from a recognised university, or a professional graduate qualification accepted by the Institute as equivalent. Most PhD/MPhil students also have a postgraduate Masters degree with a good grade for their dissertation.
In addition, you should have at least two years' full-time (or the part-time equivalent) relevant experience.
English language proficiency
If your first language is not English, the Institute will need proof of your proficiency in English. We will accept the following evidence:
* IELTS - minimum overall score 7.0 (with score of no lower than 6.0 for writing and 6.5 for reading)
* TOEFL - 650 in paper based test; 280 in computerised test; 114 in internet based test
