Location of Pompeu Fabra University

The doctorate in Linguistic Communication and Multilingual Mediation trains researchers in linguistics and translation, in their applied and theoretical-descriptive aspects.
The programme aims to train doctors who are creative, autonomous in criteria and in methodological rigour; who can make significant contributions with the necessary external recognition, and can carry out their task appropriately in new, different, dynamic work environments.

Objectives

* Translation studies: strategies and procedures: To train researchers in the theory of translation and translatology, specific aspects of legal-economic and scientific-technical translation, critique, comparison and evaluation of translations, the history of translations in the areas of Catalan and Spanish, the history of reflections on translation, automatic translation, audiovisual and multimedia translation.
* Literary reception and translation: To train researchers in literary and humanistic translation, fundamentally from English, French and German into Catalan and Spanish; comparative literature; dissemination and reception of foreign cultures in Catalan and Spanish environments, etc.
* Discourse Analysis: To train researchers in the field of the exchange of communications, the genres of discourse in different formats and the organisation and procedures associated with each one. The study of discourse is approached from a multidisciplinary perspective and is extended to the fields of translation (strategies of construction and transfer of meaning), of social discourse (discursive procedures and genres) and of specialised discourse (linguistic and cognitive aspects).
* Language acquisition: To train researchers in the acquisition of first and second languages and complete the training of language and applied linguistics professionals who have a special interest in gaining greater knowledge of the theoretical frameworks concerning the acquisition by humans of the ability for language communication. This includes experimental techniques and psycholinguistic methods.
* Language learning: To train researchers in the fields of language learning and didactics, in the theoretical models of applied linguistics and in the methodological instruments that enable the description of the learning processes, in addition to the analysis and assessment of methods and didactic materials.
* Lexicology and lexicography: To train specialised researchers in the study of vocabulary and associated lexicographic applications (dictionaries, thesauruses, etc.) and expand on the academic training of professionals who work in traditional and computational lexicography in publishing houses and other entities.
* Terminology and knowledge management: To train professionals and researchers in terminology, understood as the set of lexical units that convey specialised knowledge in the discourses of the sciences, technology and of the professions, always in a real context of communication, and its applications (terminography, information resources, computational tools, etc.).
* Formal and descriptive linguistics and variation: To train researchers in the field of linguistics: the description and comparison of languages, the study of the architecture of human language competency, and the study of the variable nature of such competency at both the cognitive and the social levels.
* Computational linguistics and language engineering: To train researchers and expert professionals in the field of the computerised processing of language and the development of computer applications in the different areas of language communication and multilingual mediation.
