Location of Graz University of Technology (TU Graz)

The object of the Doctoral School of Mathematics and Scientific Computing jointly organised by Karl-Franzens-University and Graz University of Technology in the framework of NAWI Graz is to train doctoral students at a postgraduate level in the sub-disciplines of mathematics taught at Graz and to prepare them for scientific occupations in these fields.

The doctoral programme imparts the ability to independently carry out basic and applied research in mathematics and neighbouring areas. Basic elements of the doctoral programme, on the one hand, are the introductory and advanced seminars which are organised by both universities, and on the other hand, the advanced courses.

The aim of the Engineering Sciences doctoral program at Graz University of Technology is, beyond the pre-professional education and training, to acquire the ability to do consolidated, independent scientific work in the technical fields of competence of Graz University of Technology. Students who accomplish this objective are awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Engineering Sciences (Dr. techn.).

Qualification Profile:

A Doctor of Engineering Sciences of Graz University of Technology has consolidated and perfected the ability to formulate engineering and scientific questions abstractly and to develop research-based analyses and problem-solving approaches, and is capable of doing independent scientific work on a high level.

She/he is capable of carrying out team work in the field of engineering and scientific research in both the university and industrial sectors, as well as to assume a coordinating and leading function.

She/he has a broad basis as well as a consolidated specialisation and can thus broaden and innovatively apply scientific knowledge in different fields of application.

Contents

Students at the joint Doctoral School are registered at one of the two participating
universities and are thus subject to the respective studies law.

Courses

Compulsory subject:

Specific basic subjects: These are courses at a high postgraduate level taken
from the following list of basic topics each to the amount of 3 to 4 semester hours
per week (SH):

* Algebra
* Analysis
* Discrete mathematics
* Geometry
* Numerical mathematics
* Continuous and discrete optimisation
* Stochastics
* Number theory.

Two courses with different basic themes from this list are to be completed.

Scientific methods and communication: seminars and tutorials for doctoral candidates to the amount of 6 to 8 SH:

* Introductory seminar, joint doctoral seminar, special seminars, tutorials, instructions for independent scientific work.

Optional Subject:

Courses to the amount of 4 SH which appropriately supplements or treats the thesis
topic in more depth. For this to take place, courses at a high postgraduate level to the amount of 8 SH per year are to be regularly offered.

Doctoral Thesis:

The doctoral thesis is to be submitted to the chairperson of the Doctoral School (KFUG)
or the responsible Dean of Studies (GUT), respectively. The latter proposes the referees to the Dean of Studies (KFUG) in agreement with the co-ordination team. At the same time, suggestions of the student and supervisor are to be taken into account. The habilitated members of the Doctoral School are to be informed by email of the preselection of the referees. They are allowed a period of one week (five working days) in which to make a response. Any negative responses are to be recorded.
The doctoral thesis is to be assessed by at least two referees who do not belong to the
same university. The Dean of Studies responsible requests the referees to provide
reports.

The chairperson of the Doctoral School (KFUG) or the Dean of Studies responsible
(TUG), respectively, informs the habilitated members of the Doctoral School by email on arrival of the reports. The reports are placed in the responsible office of the Dean of
Studies for perusal until the date of the viva voce. All members of the Doctoral School
are entitled to peruse the reports under obligation of confidentiality.

As a rule, significant parts of the doctoral thesis should be accepted for publication in
refereed journals. If this is not the case, a third report is to be obtained.

Joint Meeting of Habilitated Members:

The members of the Doctoral School who have the right to teach constitute the Meeting
of Habilitated Members. This meeting is to be called at least once per academic year. It is incumbent on them to plan the range of courses, which should be carried out if at all possible three years in advance. The habilitated members of the Doctoral School are
jointly responsible for the quality of the doctoral education.

Joint Co-ordination Team:

The co-ordination team consists of members of the co-ordination teams of both
participating universities. It meets once per semester and has the following tasks:

* Convening the joint Meeting of Habilitated Members;
* Safeguarding the range of courses to fulfil curricular requirements;
* Pre-appraisal of the doctoral theses and proposal of the experts;
* Setting the schedules of the public vivas, invitation to the vivas and proposal of the examiners to the Dean of Studies;
* Response to the Dean of Studies on doctoral projects and in particular their feasibility;
* Administrative management of the doctoral candidates.

The last three points can be delegated to the chairperson of the Doctoral School (KFUG) or the responsible Dean of Studies (GUT), respectively, so that the co-ordination team only has to be convened in cases of doubt.

Viva Voce:

The date of the viva voce and the composition of the Examination Senate is to be
announced by email to all members of the Doctoral School at least two weeks before. In the choice of date for the viva, it must be ensured that the viva can take place publicly in the context of the Doctoral School.

The viva voce consists of two parts:

* a 45-minute talk by the doctoral candidate on his/ her scientific work. All members of the Doctoral School are invited to this talk. After the talk there is an opportunity for the audience to pose questions regarding the talk.
* an oral examination conducted by two specialist examiners subsequent to the talk. 20-25 minutes per examiner are allotted for this. The chairperson is entitled to ask questions. The examination part has the character of a defence of the doctoral thesis with specialised questions regarding the doctoral thesis and the scientific field closely connected to it.

Requirements

Admission to the doctoral programme is effected by the Rector and presupposes not only the general prerequisites but also the university studies law section of the statutes of TU Graz:

* The completion of a relevant engineering or natural sciences diploma or master´s degree at a university, or
* the completion of a different degree course at a recognised Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational establishment which is equivalent to the above-mentioned studies, or
* the completion of a degree course at a recognised Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational establishment together with supplementary curricular requirements.
* In the case that a submitted degree certificate does not fulfil the condition of "equivalence" under item 1 or item 2, admission to the doctoral programme can be combined with an obligation to complete specific or additional courses. Their amount and contents is laid down by the body responsible for studies law in agreement with the co-ordinators of the doctoral school in question.

In the case of admission according to items 1 or 2, the doctoral programme consists of one section of studies lasting three years (regular duration of studies).

In the case of admission according to item 3, the doctoral programme is extended by up to two semesters. In the case that the doctoral student completes the doctoral programme in a time shorter than the regular duration of studies, the body responsible for studies law must give his/ her permission.

Additional Requirements

Faculty

Doctoral schools are expert boards that are responsible for the implementation of the
content of the subject-specific details of the curriculum. Every doctoral school consists of a larger subject area including its sub-disciplines. Doctoral schools can be set up in a crossfaculty way or in cooperation with other universities. If this is the case, then the teachingresponsibilities according to § 6 are to be divided between the participating faculties or universities in consultation with each other.
