The doctoral school offers physicists and mathematicians training in the interdisciplinary field of astronomy and all its methods of observation, measurement and calculation.
It focuses on interactions with mathematics, computer science, optics, plasma physics, particle physics, the earth sciences, etc. to address, inter alia, the needs for development of powerful observation tools, both in space and on the ground, using a variety of advanced technologies (optics, metrology, cryogenics, control engineering).

The leading French scientific university and 7th European university according to the Shanghai ranking, UPMC represents significant research potential.

Over 3,400 PhD students and around 4,500 researchers and research professors are spread across approximately 160 laboratories and 20 schools. This research potential gives it important responsibilities in terms of teaching and, in particular, doctoral teaching.
