The Ph.D. program requires admitted students to take four core courses (Intl 601 Quantitative Research Methods, Intl 602 Comparative Politics, Intl 603 International Relations, Intl 604 Political Theory) and three elective courses listed under the MA in International Relations program as well as some of the courses from other relevant graduate programs.
PhD candidates will have the opportunity to take graduate-level electives on such topics as European Union, Turkish politics, international political economy, and conflict studies among others, which reflect the areas of particular strength in our department. Students will also have the opportunity to attend programs in other countries, including distinguished universities in Europe and the United States.
The Ph.D. program requires admitted students to take a minimum of 7 courses. All Ph.D. students have to take:
INTL 601 Quantitative Research Methods
INTL 602 Comparative Politics
INTL 603 International Relations
INTL 604 Political Theory
Ph.D. students can take any of the following courses listed under the MA in International Relations program as well as some of the courses from other relevant graduate programs. They will have the opportunity to take graduate-level electives on such topics as European Union, Turkish Politics, Political Economy, and Conflict Studies among others, which reflect the areas of particular strength in our department. Students will also have the opportunity to attend programs in other countries, including distinguished universities in Europe and the United States.
Students who have teaching assistantship assignments must take TEACH 500: Teaching Experience during the semesters of their assignments. Students must also take ENGL 500: Graduate Writing course.
INTL 601 Quantitative Research Methods
Reviews the quantitative tools employed in contemporary political science research with particular emphasis on reading and applied understanding of quantitative research.
INTL 602 Comparative Politics
Examines the major theories and questions in the field of comparative politics with particular emphasis on reviewing and applying the comparative method.
INTL 603 International Relations
Examines the core theories and questions in the field of international relations with particular emphasis on divergent methodological approaches and their assumptions.
INTL 604 Political Theory
Examines the major questions and theories in classical and contemporary political theory.
INTL 695 Ph.D. Disseration
Independent research towards Ph.D. degree.
ENGL 500 Graduate Writing
This is a writing course specifically designed to improve academic writing skills as well as critical reading and thinking. The course objectives will be met through extensive reading, writing and discussion both in and out
of class. Student performance will be assessed and graded by Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
