Hanken offers advanced research-based doctoral education to students aiming for a career requiring analytical thinking and research skills, be it in academia, the corporate world or the public sector. The studies leading to a PhD degree require four years of full-time study, of which approximately one year consists of course work. The thesis project constitutes the remaining part of the degree and is carried out under active supervision.
Research and teaching is focused upon such law as is relevant to business. It is mainly directed to the following areas:
* contract law and credit- and insolvency law,
* company law, law of corporate finance and corporate governance
* tax law with special regard to the taxation of enterprises
* intellectual property law and market law
* labour law
Legal methodology in use is partly traditional, but much influenced by European law, international instruments like tax treaties and trade agreements. Comparative law methods are also used and studies of foreign law forms an important part of current research. Hereby, a special part of the research is directed towards the interaction between law and economic theory within the reserach domains.
Hanken is a member of several Finnish Researcher Schools and is involved in active collaboration within international networks and with other universities. This guarantees the availability of a wide range of courses and other academic activities for its students.

Hanken was awarded the EQUIS accreditation in 2000. The accreditation was renewed in 2005 and 2008. The Hanken MBA was awarded the AMBA accreditation in 2008. The accreditation was awarded for five year, which is the maximum length.
