The NCG has recently led a consortium of several departments within NUI Maynooth (Dept. of Electronic Engineering and Dept. of Computer Science), Trinity College Dublin (Dept. of Computer Science), the Dublin Institute of Technology (Digital Media Centre) and University College Dublin (Dept. of Computer Science) to form a Strategic Research Cluster in Advanced Geotechnologies. The Cluster is ultimately worth EUR10m to the University and will fund 20 new Ph.D students and 10 postdoctorate research associates across the NCG, the Dept. of Electronic Engineering and Dept. of Computer Science.
The Centre is a resource for those interested in any aspect of the capture, storage, integration, management, retrieval, display, analysis or modelling of spatial data.
The aims of the NCG include:
i) To undertake fundamental research into Geocomputation
ii) To position Ireland as a key global centre of Geocomputation
iii) To stimulate the use of GIS and spatial data throughout Ireland
iv) To attract high quality researchers to Ireland and
v) To undertake research on Irish spatial data to gain a better understanding of issues of spatial equity and efficiency
Research at the Centre falls into several areas involving Geographical Information Systems and:
