The Department of Adult and Community Education welcomes applications to join the Masters and PhD Programme that engages in research in a wide range of topics of interest to adult and community education. The staff welcomes research students who would enhance the existing research knowledge of the department and work toward an MLitt or PhD. The staff in the department is willing to discuss proposals with applicants as part of the application process. The department´s Centre for Research in Adult Learning and Education is active in a number of research projects and supports students engaged in postgraduate research.


Contents

1. Applied Action/ResearchWe welcome students who want to undertake a research Masters Degree (MLitt) or PhD in a wide range of topics of interest to the field of Adult and Community Education. The staff engages in research projects and welcome research students who would enhance the existing research knowledge of the Department and work toward an MLitt or PhD. There is a strong research tradition already pursued in which the staff works with community groups or organisations to enable them assess needs, identify appropriate actions and define a process of evaluation. This involves an interactive relationship between the Department and the client and implies a relationship based on partnership and mutuality. Staff in the Department will discuss proposals with applicants as part of the application process.

2. Policy Research

The Department is involved in a range of consultancies with Government, Statutory Bodies and the NGO (e.g. Consumer Association of Ireland, Irish Research Association in Adult and Community Education) sector in shaping policy, both at national and international level (e.g. European Society for Research in the Education of Adults).

3. Pure Research

The pure research activities of the staff concentrate on areas such as

o (Adult) Education and Issues of Equality

o Gender Issues

o Local (Participatory) Development

o Mental Health and Well-being

o Holistic Education

o Early School Leaving in the context

of Community Education

o Access Issues in Higher Education

A number of current funded research and consultancy projects in the department are looking at topics such as e-learning, consumer education and mature student access to higher education.

Research Degree Proposals

The Department is interested in working with students who have experience in the diverse and broad field of Adult and Community Education. Of particular interest are research projects concerning radical perspectives on adult learning theory, theoretical and practical studies of community development, women´s education, adult basic education, human development programmes, adult guidance and counselling, interventions with marginalised adults and their communities as well as topics in higher education.

The Department is also interested in attracting students with a research interest in development studies, e.g. sustainable community development, local development and human development.
