This degree recognises the significant role that archaeology and heritage professionals play in knowledge production. In building up a portfolio of unpublished work through professional projects the student indicates a record of achievement at a high professional level.

The portfolio is supported by two chapters which introduces the portfolio and places it in its professional context and a concluding chapter which provides an account of the portfolio´s academic context. The construction of the portfolio and the two chapters is assisted by a supervision board which meets at regular intervals.

It is a non-residential scheme leading to a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) through part-time enrolment over a period of 5-9 years. With the agreement of the committee work completed prior to enrolment may be considered for inclusion in the portfolio and could lead to a reduction in period of candidature.
