Location of University of Essex

The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

Our Department is able to offer PhD Pure Mathematics as several members of staff have interests in this area, including semigroup theory, group theory (especially presentations) and several aspects of discrete mathematics, for example, graph theory. You work under the supervision of one or more of these members of staff. Your PhD typically involves wide reading round the subject area in your first-year, then gradually developing original results over your second and third-years before writing them up in a coherent fashion.

We also offer the Masters by Dissertation (requiring at least one year of study, usually writing a connected account of some topic with original work very welcome but not required) and the MPhil (requiring two years of study and a thesis containing a few original insights).
