Location of University of Essex

The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering has over 40 years' experience of providing high-quality postgraduate training and research supervision. Postgraduates account for nearly a quarter of the School's total student population.

The School has six computing laboratories for teaching, coursework and research. These offer exceptional facilities with some labs open 24 hours a day and an extensive software range. All are regularly upgraded in line with current developments in both technology and curriculum, an example being the laboratory for Intelligent Embedded Systems, based on autonomous vehicles ('mobile robotics') which provides a highly motivating environment for student projects.

Teaching and research in the area of electronics and telecommunications is supported by extensive interconnected computer facilities and software aids, together with a wide range of test and instrumentation equipment. Postgraduate lectures are supplemented by a coordinated programme of seminars by visiting experts from industry and academia.

The major research groups within the School cover: brain-computer interfaces; constraint satisfaction and optimisation, plus computational finance; dependable systems; robotics; intelligent inhabited environments; machine learning and intelligent agents; natural and evolutionary computation; natural language engineering and web applications.
