Yearly, ten to fifteen new PhD students from around the globe join our acclaimed research groups. Students and staff are members of the MGC postgraduate school.
Each PhD student takes on a four-year research project, and enjoys:
* a stimulating and highly interactive academic environment
* four years university employment with social benefits
* gross monthly salary from EUR 2000 (1st year) up to EUR 2600 (4th year)
* daily supervision and coaching in the lab
PhD students will follow postgraduate school courses, seminars, and lectures, up to an equivalent of 30 ECTS (European Credits). Some examples: biochemistry and biophysics, cell and developmental biology, genetics, animal imaging, epigenetic regulation, SNPs and human disease.
During the 4 years of your employment as a PhD student, you are entitled to follow courses, seminars, and lectures, up to an equivalent of 30 ECTS. In agreement with your supervisor, you can register for courses and seminars that you find interesting.
Some courses are mandatory.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

The Research School Medical Genetics Center South-West Netherlands (MGC) is a joint initiative of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and Erasmus MC, offering education, practical training, and coaching to all PhD students within its institutes. It was recognized by the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) in 2003.
Erasmus MC Graduate School is a world renowned institute in research on the Life Sciences. It is ranked number 1 in Europe.
Faculty members are internationally recognized scientists and educators, with an excellent record of publications in peer-reviewed top international life science journals. Several Faculty are members of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and many are elected members of the European Molecular Biology Organization, or are involved in other international organizations such as the World Health Organization.
Faculty members are experienced in training students and postdoctoral fellows to take on university faculty, medical school faculty, clinical laboratory and industrial biomedical research positions, both nationally and internationally. To date, more than 550 students have successfully finished their PhD under the supervision of one or more of our Faculty members.
