The 3rd degree (doctoral) study programme is oriented to development of new methods, highest theoretical and professional knowledge of students. Main goal of study of 3rd level of Environmental Engineering is ensure engagement of student to research and development departments in companies, institutes and faculties in own country or abroad. The contemporary prepared program of education is based on scientific work of teachers. The Ph.D. student is going to develop skill of highest associative and abstractive meaning by using systematic study of scientific methods supported by strong professional and applicative courses of program. After completing study the student as doctor of Philosophy is able to be principal researcher and scientist at international, national and industrial research projects. He/she is capable to solving most difficult scientific and as well industrial problems in order to reduce cost of design, manufacturing and maintenance.
Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is going to ensure achievement of top knowledge from different scientific area. Students are getting also an information about references and literature where is possible to develop new scientific methods and approach. The Ph.D. engineers will obtain high knowledge, skilfulness and positive approach to scientific research and engineer´s problems in industry. The environmental engineers with broad professional knowledge can find employment in almost all branches of industry, R&D institutes, independent companies, design departments, as managers and members of administration, project engineers, experts in the army or government consultants, etc. The engineering graduates Ph. D. should be able to apply nowadays theory achievement and upgrade with own research results to applicative development. Broad, interdisciplinary oriented study courses and subjects provide to students base for own creative and innovative potential. The students are going to be able to analyse problems, eliminate unimportant facts and build synthesis and provide innovative solutions. They are going to be able to provide best solution regarding to time and estimate the consequence of provided solution. The graduate Ph.D. students are able to work independently, innovative and non-conventional manner, but at the same time they are able to communicate with industrial and scientific board at home or at international level. Specific competence means direct development and application of specific knowledge. This knowledge is developed during simulations, study of working examples or direct application of research results to find solutions of practical problems.
Graduated Ph.D. student of 3rd level of Study program Environmental Engineering is scientist and expert with deepest theoretical and methodical knowledge. The obtained knowledge is able to use for solving most difficult problems of design, planning and leading of scientific or research developed activity. One of his/hers main tasks is development of new original approach and solution broad topics of Environmental Engineering. Study of Environmental Engineering provides students self scientific building skill. He/she can select appropriate courses and subjects according to either his/hers own wishes or company interest.
The faculty staff are fully qualified and prepared to equip their students with all the necessary knowledge, training and modern aspects of engineering, during their studies. The staffs are open to new ideas and strive to provide their students with an insight into the latest research findings from at home and abroad. This educational process is fully supported by modern didactic and practical learning methods.
3rd bologna level postgraduate study program of Environmental Engineering lasts three years (6 semesters) and has 180 ECTS credits. Each year of study has 60 ECTS credits and each semester 30 ECTS credits. One credit stands for 30 hours of student work what annually is 1800 hours of student work. The subjects are rated at 6 ECTS credits.
In the 1st year (60 ECTS) the students join 3 compulsory subjects (18 ECTS), 3 elective subjects (18 ECTS) and Methods of scientific research work 1 and 2 are (12 ECTS each).
The 2nd year (60 ECTS) consists of Individual research work I, II (30 ECTS each).
In the 3rd year (60 ECTS) the Individual research work III is rated with 30 ECTS and the thesis with 30 ECTS.

The 3rd level study programme of Environmental engineering is available to candidates who have completed:
o the 2nd level study programme (M.Sc.);
o uniform bologna master study program of 300 ECTS credit points;o university study programme, accredited before 11. 6. 2004, which is assessed with at least 240 ECTS;
o higher education professional study programme, accredited before 11. 6. 2004, and specialization study programme, which are together assessed with at least 240 ECTS; such candidates have to complete the differential study obligations from the 2nd level study programme of Environmental Engineering from the field of ecology and environment protection in the amount of 30 ECTS credits before entering the study programme.o equivalent study programmes abroad.
The candidate selection in the event of enrolment limitations will be based on:
o average study grade (20%),
o grade of diploma work or M.Sc. thesis (30%) and
o selection exam (50%).
The candidates can compensate up to 30% of the elective exam with scientific and professional work done before entering the study programme, which is recorded by appropriate publications in scientific and professional literature. The conditions for evaluation of scientific and professional work are defined by the faculty Senate.
Enrolment in public valid study programmes, carried out by public and concessionary higher education institutions is performed on basis of a public competition. Enrolment notice for postgraduate study programmes for the following academic year is announced at least four months before beginning of an academic year.
Before announcing the notice´s content, the university must acquire a concordance from the government of the Republic of Slovenia.
Candidates for enrolment in postgraduate study programmes register within beginning of September, but latest till September the 15th. Candidates register at a University of Maribor member, they state their desired study programme, enclose evidence about fulfilled enrolment conditions, a copy of their diploma and diploma supplement and a short autobiography.
Enrolment in postgraduate study programmes is carried out at the latest in two weeks after beginning of an academic year, out of justified reasons, set by higher institution board also at the latest till October 30th.
With application and curriculum vitae foreign students need to enclose the notification of recognition of foreign education, which means that they have to complete the N-form (available at following link: and enclose the following documents: 1. The original final certificate of completed school and examinations (diploma) The original has to be LEGALIZED on the basis of: a.) the 1961 Hague Convention - with apostille affixed b.) the Authentication of Documents in International Circulation Act (The certificate must be legalised on the basis of local law in their country first, the last stamp from their country is from Ministry of Foreign Affair; after that they need to legalise this certificate at one of the Embassies of the Republic of Slovenia, which is accredited for their country);2. Certified Slovenian transcription of the certificate mentioned above;3. Photocopies of the transcripts or diploma supplement (copies have to be legalized);4.
