English and American Studies has a strong tradition in research and its current profile includes both traditional areas of research and new fields and methods. Research is conducted across both the chronological span and the theoretical range of the subject. Specific areas of international research excellence include Old and Middle English, Renaissance Literature, Romanticism, Victorian Literature and Culture, Contemporary Literature, Modern Irish and Scottish Studies, American Studies and Cultural Theory.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testAcademic Requirement - PhD: A First or Upper Second class honours degree (or its equivalent for overseas applicants) in English or a closely related area, plus the equivalent level of achievement in a recognised MA programme.
Langauage Requirement - Students whose first language is not English are required to take either the IELTS or TOEFL test. On the IELTS test applicants are normally expected to score a minimum of 7.0 overall; on the TOEFL test a minimum score of 600 (paper test) or 250 (computer test) is expected.
