Even tough the main goal of the PhD programme is to enable and prepare students for the most demanding research work, it is also with their degree that they will gain a set of skills or a kind of proficiency in their field, which are not the only necessary requirements in search for employment in their research field. With the PhD study programme, the students will obtain a competence, which is needed in a place where new, complicated challenges occur on a regular basis. These challenges cannot be solved with already known methods and simplified solutions, but only with thought out innovative approach. In order to do so, we include some of the approaches in the following lines:
- to develop innovative solutions by combining a variety of original strategies, or readjusting already known methods and approaches,
- to solve complicated problems with newly designed tools or methods,
- to prepare logical plans for realization of new ideas,
- to quickly find, extract and integrate information from both complete and incomplete sources,
- to confront the unknown, and uncertain, as well as anticipate possible changes and difficulties,· to accept possible failure and act accordingly,
- to work independently, precisely and with perseverence,
- to see things differently, with flexibility and interdisciplinary approach,
- to cooperate with others,
- to manage time, as well as material, workgroup and financial sources,
- always have curiosity, follow recent trends and quickly adapt to new skills and knowledge,
- to successfully communicate for various purposes and with the use of different media.
During the PhD study, the students will become experts in their chosen and very narrow specific field of media communications. It will give them independence when assessing past and formation of new ideas, methods, and approaches. More specifically, they will especially gain following subject-specific skills:
- the use of political economy theory, networking, privacy, public spheres and control the contemporary dialogue on new media,
- to establish a contemporary dialogue about the development of media and the historical context,
- to analyze contemporary visual contents in relationship to the cultural and political potential, especially from the virtual, gender and political viewpoint,
- to plan visual projects, evaluate current visual production, analyze social significance, notice aesthetic/political potential of contemporary contents,
- to analyze outcome, interpret and suggest improvements for supervised fields during development and track effectiveness of e-contents and e-services,
- to develop a well informed creative stand, which is concerned with contemporary dialogue of the visual language and offers a constructive criticism of visual space,
- to recognize and attest to convergent surroundings and get a control of developing content, which is based on convergent surroundings,
- to understand the importance of dialogue in the development of communication, as well as get a grip of the mechanism behind a simple dialogue in society and media and to have it as a rule of thumb in the working practice,
- to be in command of theoretical and practical knowledge as well as rules of communication, which are necessary tools towards an understanding of structure and function of media communications, along the relationship with the public,
- to recognize the scope of other cultures and to adjust to them with the proper behavior and communication,
- the ability to perform research and achieve improvement in the field of introduction of governing in the intercultural space,
- to identify, plan and solve any problem during research,
- to plan and perform a research, analyze, verify and document the results of the research, to report on knowledge and effort of the work,
- to initiate a research project, critically validate the chosen material, to estimate social significance and recognize potential of talked-about media technology,
- the ability to perform research and use new technology in the field of electronic media and introduce contemporary technology to solve and compliment user needs in the electronic media,
- to analyze the ability of letting the information performance into the media solutions and to plan out innovative informational solutions for identifying needs of media.

To enroll into the 3rd cycle programme of Media Communications studies, the applicant must have successfully completed one of the following:
a) The 2nd cycle study programme,
b) University study programme initiated prior to 11.6.2004.,
c) Professional study programme (initiated prior to 11.6.2004.) and the study programme with a concentration prerequisite. Stated candidates, before applying, must complete the requirement of having acquired 35 ECTS credits from the 2nd cycle programme of Media Communications studies. Student obligations (the list of subjects) of the respective candidate are determined by the University study committee, according to the candidate´s field of education (type of programme completed by the candidate)
d) Vocational study programme, completed according to the specifications of EU, or a Joint Masters Programme, which carries 300 ECTS credits.
Previous proper knowledge is gained during Undergraduate or Postgraduate (the 2nd cycle of Bologna declaration) studies in the field of Media Communications, Computer Science of Informatics.
If there is a limited enrollment, the candidates will be chosen based on the following:
- final grades (20%)
- grades, based on the exam from the elective subject, in the field of Media Communications (80%).
At the elective subject exam, candidate can compensate 50% of the grade from the current research work in the field of study.
Grading criteria is:
- original scientific papers or reviews published in journals with the impact factor (JCR) or the journals catalogued in databases such as SCI, SSCI, or A&HCI,
- published contributions in the International Conference Anthology,
- other publishing.
PREREQUISITES FOR SWITCHING MAJORS
According to the criteria for switching majors to the 2nd year study programme of the 3rd level Media Communications, the candidate can register if he/she completed the following:
- study programme for Master of Science (accepted prior to 11.6.2004) and at registration, 60 ECTS credits are acknowledged,
- university study programme (accepted prior to 11.6.2004) and study programme for acquirement of specialization, and at the registration, 60 ECTS credits are acknowledged.
