The objective of the HISTORY PhD study program is to educate professionals in the field of historiography, with broad knowledge of the fundamentals for understanding difficult historical problems, including theoretical and methodological concepts. The objective is to qualify professionals for independent development of new knowledge and for solving demanding problems by testing and improving the known and discovering new solutions to problems in the field of historiography. Qualified professionals will be capable of developing critical reflection and competent in solving demanding philosophical questions, publishing scholarly articles and monographs, and conducting scholarly projects. PhD candidates will be capable of solving demanding questions in the field of history, of publishing scholarly research results based on primary and secondary sources, in the form of scholarly articles and monographs, of conducting scholarly research projects, and creating scholarly research work in the field of historiography.
The main objective of the PhD History study program is to qualify historians who will during the study process gain all the necessary knowledge connected with their chosen historic era, and in a broader sense with history as a scholarly discipline.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testAnyone who has completed the following may register in the PhD study program in HISTORY:
- study program at the 2nd level
- university study program adopted before June 11th 2004
- higher education professional study program, adopted before June 11th 2004, and study program for acquiring specialization. Before registration in the study program, these candidates are assigned study obligations in the 30 ECTS range: Practical Course in Historiography (10 ECTS) for all study fields.
o Study field in ANCIENT HISTORY: Greek History (10 ECTS), Roman History and the Slovene Territory in Antiquity (10 ECTS)
o Study field in HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE AGES: History of the Slovene Territory in the Middle Ages (10 ECTS) - obligatory, Non-European History in the Middle Ages (10 ECTS) or History of Europe in the Middle Ages (10 ECTS) - optional;
o Study field in History of the modern period: History of the Slovene Territory in the Early Modern Period (10 ECTS) - obligatorym, Non-European History in the Early Modern Period (10 ECTS) or History of Europe in the Early Modern Period (10 ECTS) - optional
o study field in MODERN HISTORY: Slovene History in the 19th Century (1790-1914) (10 ECTS) - obligatory, History of the Balkans in the 19th Century 1790 - 1914 (10 ECTS), Non-European History in the 19th Century (1776-1914) (10 ECTS) or History of Europe in the 19th Century (1789-1914) (10 ECTS) - optional
o study field in CONTEMPORARY HISTORY: Slovene History after 1914 (10 ECTS) - obligatory, European History after 1914 (10 ECTS), History of the Balkans after 1914 (10 ECTS) or Non-European History after 1914 (10 ECTS) - optional
- study program of education for professions as determined by EU directives, or other Masters' degree study program evaluated with 300 ECTS.
In case of limited admittance, candidate selection will be based upon:
· Study success (average grade) 40%,
· Undergraduate diploma or Masters' dissertation grade 30%,
· Examination 30%.
A part of the examination (40%) can be fulfilled by presenting the results of professional and scholarly work.
Main criteria for scholarly work is publications such as:
- scholarly monograph
- independent scholarly text in monograph
- original or review scholarly articles.
Main criteria for professional work are:
- professional monograph,
- independent professional article in monograph,
- published professional contributions at conferences,
- professional articles and/or such article reviews,
- editing monograph or journal,
- other forms of documented professional activity.
Whenever there is a need to evaluate a candidate´s scholarly and professional work prior to registration, it is carried out by the Commission for Study Affairs of the Faculty of Arts Senate, University of Maribor, on the History Department's request.
History study requires knowledge of foreign languages which vary regarding to chosen study program.
Study course: ANCIENT HISTORYand HISTORY OF THE MIDLLE AGES: Knowledge of Latin and German language is recommended due to available sources and literature.
Study course: HISTORY OF EARLY MODERN PERIOD: Knowledge of Latin and German language is recommended due to available sources and literature. Depending on chosen study content, additional languages such as Italian and Hungarian are recommended.
Study course: MODERN HISTORY (19th century) in CONTEMPORARY HISTORY (20th century): Knowledge of English and German language is recommended due to available sources and literature.
