With the increasing amount and sources of new information, the purpose of teaching is shifting from piling up information, which in a short period of time becomes outdated, to a primary focus of the meaningful critical evaluation of this information. The objective of the PHILOSOPHY PhD study program is to educate the best professionals in field of philosophy through the provision of broad humanistic knowledge, offering a foundation for understanding the most difficult philosophic questions, problems and issues: i.e., theoretical and methodological concepts. The objective is thus to qualify professionals for independent development of new knowledge and for solving the most demanding problems by testing and improving the known and discovering new solutions in the field of philosophy and in the broader area of the humanities. Professionals who are thus qualified will have the capacity to develop critical reflection and the competentce to solve the most demanding philosophical questions, to publish them in the form of scholarly articles or monographs and to conduct research projects. Moreover, the production processes for and application of knowledge, among which specific philosophical knowledge, capabilities and skills are not only wanted but inevitable, have become more and more diverse. New fields are being added to the traditional ones: philosophies of particular academic disciplines: professional ethics and applied epistemology, artificial intelligence models, etc. The newly drafted philosophy program is up-to-date even in the sense of offering students a solid basis for interdisciplinary cooperation.

The objective of the basic PHILOSOPHY PhD study program is to enable scholars in field of philosophy to become catalysts for humanistic thought, who will be capable of developing and applying new knowledge in this field - to educate independent critical thinkers to deal skillfully and in depth deal with their own professional field and at the same time, with their general, transferable capabilities and skills, to cope with the demands of the contemporary learning society. In a scholarly and professional sense, they are the most qualified among philosophers, trained for cooperative work with scholars from other fields of the humanities, the social sciences, or even the natural sciences.

The basic PHILOSOPHY PhD study program objectives are the following:

- To deepen knowledge: i.e. to upgrade the philosophical content acquired at lower (previous) education levels,

- to foster awareness of the significance of philosophy as a means for recognizing contemporary social problems, for critically evaluating their solutions and suggestions for new solutions

- to upgrade student´s rhetorical skills,

- to educate the philosophy student for independent, professionally critical and responsible work withi a profession, which requires superb knowledge of philosophy and the humanities in general,

- to transfer to the student the required knowledge of philosophical methodology and skills and to promote mobility among philosophy students,

- to enable philosophy students to successfully tailor their own professional profiles by choosing philosophical content from subject modules,

- to involve philosophy students in in-depth scholarly research in the fields of philosophy and the humanities by applying scholarly research methods,

- to consolidate and upgrade the students' confidence in their correct understanding and interpretation of philosophical theories, and of legal and professional ethics,

- to assure philosophy student the most profound knowledge in the basic and more specialized fields of philosophy,

- to introduce philosophy students with work in both domestic and foreign environments.

Requirements

Anyone who has completed the following may register to PhD study program PHILOSOPHY:

- study program of the 2nd level

- university study program, confirmed before June 11th 2004

- high education professional study program, confirmed before June 11th 2004, and study program for acquiring specialization. Before registration to study program these candidates are assigned study obligations in 60 ECTS range: Classical Philosophy Texts Analysis (8 ECTS); Knowing, Being and Mind (8 ECTS). Theoretical or Practical Philosophy (8 ECTS); Values and Virtues (8 ECTS); Philosophical Research Methodology (10 ECTS); Three facultative subjects (3 x 6 ECTS)

- study program, educating for professions determined with the EU directives, or other Master degree study program evaluated with 300 ECTS.

Registration prerequisites are fulfilled by those who have completed the equivalent education abroad and have the nostrification in Slovenia.

In case of limited registration the candidate selection will be based upon:

- average study grade (10%),

- PhD or MSc dissertation grade (10%) and

- facultative examination (80%).

Facultative examination obligations may be substituted by professional or scientific work ranging 50 % of examination obligations. Major criteria for scientific work are publications such as:

- scientific monograph

- independent scientific text in monograph

- original or review of scientific articles in journals with influence factor (JCR) or in journals indexed in data bases SCI, SSCI or A&HCI, and journals listed among Faculty of Art criteria for election into the academic positions.

Major criteria for professional work are:

- professional monograph,

- independent professional article in monograph,

- published professional contributions at conferences,

- professional articles and/or such article reviews,

- editing monograph or journal,

- other forms of documented professional activity.

Whenever there is a need to evaluate candidate´s scientific and professional work prior to registration, it is the Commission for Study Affairs of the Faculty of Arts Senate which confirms the evaluation. Commission for Study Affairs of the Faculty of Arts Senate may, as a condition for grading, demand a successfully passed facultative subject examination, assigned to particular candidate.
