Research projects can be formulated within any area of the school research interest. Research in the School is particularly focused on fundamental studies of the materials and processes related to the formation and evolution of the Earth and the Solar System, development and the evolution of the Earth's lithosphere, and systems at the Earth's surface, including those at the interfaces between the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere.
The School has a large and very active research school with substantial support from the government and industry. School research activity centres on seven major research groups:
Physics and Chemistry of Minerals and Fluids
Isotope Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry
Dynamic Sedimentology and Petroleum Geoscience
Structural and Petrological Geoscience
Environmental Geochemistry and Geomicrobiology
Palaeontology
Atmospheric Sciences
