The PhD study program in Hungaristic studies - Hungarian Language represents abroadening and enrichment of humanities study at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Maribor. Until now in Slovenia, the higher education system did not offer the opportunity to complete a PhD in Hungarian studies. The proposed program is thus the first in its field.

The need to create this program stems from the necessity of upgrading the existing programs in the field of Hungarian studies from their previous levels, and from the social need for superb qualified professionals in the specific subject of Hungarian studies. Because of geographical contiguity, traditional social connectedness and mutual influences with Slovene language, literature and culture, Hungarian studies is important for Slovene space particularly because it broadens the outlook on Slovene cultural space.

Graduates will be capable of independent research work in the field of Hungarian linguistic: sensible and well-founded research on contact language from both the theoretical and applied aspects; interdisciplinary connection of knowledge and understanding; independent detectiion, analysis and solving of problems and consequently, responsible co-creatiion of the linguistic (and cultural) research fields in the national and international framework. The program exhibits a thoughtful internal structured; it strives for interdisciplinary research approaches; and it is internationally comparable. To the greatest possible extent it is based on the general objectives and specific directions of the Bologna reform.

The study plan is conceived as an indivisible unit of two connected complexes - precise and in-depth acquaintance with theoretical and methodological problems in selected linguistic fields, and training for theoretically based and methodologically adequate individual research work.

Hungarian studies - Hungarian Language program, as a third-level program, represents a natural upgrading of the knowledge and skills acquired on preceding levels of linguistic studies. It leads to the development of critical thinking, to the acquirement of systemic knowledge and skills for the analysis of selected problem units and qualifies a graduate for professionally correct and ethically and morally adequate solving of targeted research problems.

In terms of the planned study content, graduates of the proposed study program will become broadly educated intellectuals with in-depth theoretical and methodological knowledge. This is why they will be competitive in the research field, in cultural and educational institutions, publishing, (new) media, in intellectual entrepreneurship, and in public management and project management in the fields of research, education and culture.

The third-cycle study program in Hungarian studies - Hungarian Language provides a systematic view of the Hungarian language in its actual, contemporary state (synchrony). It considers knowledge of the Hungarian language in different social, political, historical, and other circumstances. Students will deal intensively with actual themes in the fields of contemporary Hungarian descriptive (theoretical) and applied linguistics. Through analysis and research work, they will participate in the analysis of innovation in the Hungarian language.
