The PhD Programme is the optimal basis for training prospective researchers in the field. The increasing number of researchers shows the academic importance of the area, as well as the appearance of new research journals at both national and international levels.
The main goal is to enhance the research abilities of students, in order to write and defend the dissertation. Students will acquire a general knowledge of Economic History and a deeper understanding of the specific issue of their choice.
Students will be expected to do research within the area of Economics, and specifically in Economic History. They will take part in a research seminar organised by the Department, as well as activities outside the Department.
PhD students are eligible to collaborate with teaching activities, gaining a very valuable experience for their prospective careers.
The Programme also aims the integration of students in the European research space, which enjoys a growing international and comparative focus. The PhD is involved in the activities of the GLOBALIZING EUROPE ECONOMIC HISTORY NETWORK Programme (European Science Foundation), which is lead by a group of historians from Carlos III University and coordinated by the Figuerola Institute of Economic History. The strategic objective is to enhance cooperation between the participating institutions in order to facilitate the convergence in quantitative methods research, to consolidate national and international projects in a common framework as well as the organisation of joint activities for training postgraduates.

The following organisms are currently recruiting graduates in Economic History from European universities similar to Carlos III:
European Central Bank, Bank of Spain and other central banks in Europe, Asia and Latin America, International Monetary Fund, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Inter-American Development Bank, International Labour Organisation, World Bank, European Bank of Development. Also private companies are interested in the graduates due to their scientific abilities and the ability to understand economic and political change.
