Clinical Kinaesiology is applied to the School’s research theme Rehabilitation and Recovery. The Research Centre for Clinical Kinaesiology (RCCK) is a movement analysis laboratory using biomechanical and exercise physiology techniques, which aims to provide research evidence to inform rehabilitation practice. The lab is equipped with an 8 camera Vicon MX computerised kinematic system, two Kistler force platforms, 24 channels of surface electromyography, multiple digital video cameras with editing equipment, a Biodex and KinCom isokinetic dynamometer, a Pedar in-shoe pressure measurement system, an EMED pressure platform, a GAITRITE gait measurement system, a KT1000 knee arthrometer diagnostic ultrasound scanner, K4B2 portable gas analysis system and ADL monitoring equipment.
Collaborative work is well established:
Dr Robert van Deursen, the Director of the RCCK, is a member of the Cardiff Institute for
Tissue Engineering and Repair (CITER), which collaborates with the Wound Healing Research Unit and the School of Medicine (Neurology). The RCCK is developing collaborative projects with the School of Biosciences. International collaborations have been established, for instance, with the Clinical Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Munster, Germany, and the Institute for Movement and Sport Sciences, ETHZ Zürich, Switzerland.
In addition, the RCCK is an integral part of the successful bid to the Arthritis Research
Campaign to establish the Cardiff Institute of Biomechanics and BioEngineering Research. A cross-University, multidisciplinary Centre of Excellence.
Special Features:
The School has a Research Student Seminar Series where research students of the School are encouraged to present and discuss their research with fellow students and staff of the School.
Current work involves:
* Biomechanics of lower limb complications due to diabetic neuropathy.
* Rehabilitation of joint instability after knee and ankle injury.
* The effect of exercise on osteoarthritis.
* Low back pain and proprioception.
* Quantitative assessment of functional weakness in neurological patients.
* Measurement of walking mobility in neurology patients.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testSuitable for graduates in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy or Radiography, or another field relevant to the particular project. A good Honours degree, or equivalent is required.
Note: International students pursuing part-time programmes of study are not eligible for Tier 4 General Student) visas and must have alternative leave to remain in the UK if they intend to study at the University in person.
