Candidates for this scheme are required to submit a substantial portfolio of original compositions written specifically for the degree, including at least one large-scale work, together with a written commentary of approximately 10,000 words.

They are encouraged to avail themselves of regular workshop opportunities with professional performers including the resident Carducci Quartet, as well as performance opportunities with the Cardiff Contemporary Music Group.

The weekly Composition Seminar allows for in-depth exploration of new and recent repertoire, including classes with guest composers and Distinguished Visiting Professor Judith Weir.

Special Features:
* Internationally regarded expertise and experience in contemporary music composition.
* The School organises workshops and masterclasses to enhance the student experience in composition and performance. There are excellent opportunities for performances of student works and candidates can also take part in Composers' Workshops with BBC National Orchestra of Wales and other ensembles.
* Assessed by submission of a portfolio of compositions and written commentary.
* Another integral part of postgraduate life at the School is the annual series of John Bird Lectures. These colloquia on current research are given by staff and postgraduate students at Cardiff and by visiting guest speakers.

Requirements

Suitable for graduates in Music. Candidates are normally expected to have a 1st or upper 2nd class Honours degree, or equivalent, and to have completed, or be about to complete, a taught Master's degree involving music.

Applicants must also show evidence of appropriate skills in music composition and written and spoken English.

Note: International students pursuing part-time programmes of study are not eligible for Tier 4 General Student) visas and must have alternative leave to remain in the UK if they intend to study at the University in person.
