Cardiff welcomes applications from students interested in researching for a PhD in the specialist areas below. The school provides training and a high level of support, and the postgraduate community contributes vitally to the University's international reputation for research.
The following research areas are of particular strength:
* Ice driven mechanical weathering
* Application of high resolution geophysics to geoenvironmental monitoring and near-surface geological investigations
* Hydrogeology,including environmental impact assessment, littoral vulnerability assessment, environmental risk assessment, environmental auditing and the toxicity of atmospheric, soil and groundwater contaminants
* Landslide mechanisms and triggering remediation strategies.
* Integration of environmental process studies with environmental impact assessment and management policy research in estuary,
coastal and offshore zones relating to ports, shipping fisheries, offshore hydrocarbons, marine aggregates, coastal/marine recreation, conservation and education
* Biological mediation of coastal ecosystem functions, including sediment dynamics, microalgal primary production and photophysiology, coastal biodiversity and stromatolite cyanobacterial photophysiology
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Suitable for graduates in Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences, Geology, and Physical Geography, Geophysics.
A first or upper second-class Honours degree or equivalent required.
Note: International students pursuing part-time programmes of study are not eligible for Tier 4 General Student) visas and must have alternative leave to remain in the UK if they intend to study at the University in person.
